Sync 3 Technical Discussion
#421
Hello all, just joined this forum in hopes of putting a successful end to my DIY attempts of installing Apple CarPlay on my, new to me, 2016 F150 supercrew with sync 3 v1.0 I purchased a few weeks ago.
I installed the HC3Z-19A387-B usb hub, saw nothing changed, went to owner.ford and downloaded and installed v 3.0 on 32gb exFat formatted thumb drive, followed install instuction to what seemed like a successful install but no Apple CarPlay or android auto. Actually no visible change other than the license showing that new 3.0 version installed. Then noticed what others have mentioned about the constant WiFi prompt on startup, redid the install taking more precaution on my timing and successfully eliminated that problem, but yet no visible change and more importantly no CarPlay. Can someone point me to the right steps, should I downgrade to 2.2?

Well I will have to start with the basics. Did you turn Carplay on in your iOS settings? and did you confirm Sync 3 took the update?
Hold power and seek forward to hard reset Sync 3.
Sadly, there use to be a real Sync 3 thread dedicated to this. You might be able to search for a cached website in Google and find the old thread.

Did you go into the settings menu and enable Carplay? You have to do that, you also need your iPhone Bluetooth connected.

Also, downgrading to Sync 3 V2.2 is pointless.

Did not come up on mine until I enabled Bluetooth, then it connected. I was sitting in my truck scratching my head why it wouldn't connect. Enabled Bluetooth and boom.
EDIT, Maybe I'm wrong I might be thinking of Apple Hands Free with Sync 2.

Yes I’m connected via Bluetooth and usb and all combinations possible of those 2. Running iOS 11.3, CarPlay setting in iPhone just prompts to press and hold voice control on steering wheel to start CarPlay setup. I do this and all that happens is Siri start and is enabled via Bluetooth on the system just as a phone call would. And nothing continues to show in “available cars” subsection. Tried with wife’s phone as well to no avail. I will continue to search, found one thread on here that was closely related closed but nothing exactly what I was experiencing

Huh, I had some issues like this at first but I got it worked out. I wish I could remember what I did. I do remember thinking "oh how stupid on my part".

Master reset Sync 3 from its settings menu and delete any previously paired infotainment systems from CarPlay on iOS. After a master rest do a hard rest too either by holding power and seek forward or though ForScan.
Did the USB hub you bought arrive new and sealed. It is not unheard of given the upgrade cost Ford lied to us about for idiots to return old parts to the dealership. Verify the part number. Another limitation can actually be the USB cable itself. Use Apples USB cable to be sure. There is actually as SOC inside every Apple USB cable.

I will do the 2 resets in the morning. I am using an Apple cert lightning cable.
Regrettably, I believe it’s the hub as well
. I ordered from an eBay retailer, first one arrived, it illuminated when installed but did not connect nor even supply power to any device, I deemed it defective got sent a replacement with better results, it connects but and here I am still without CarPlay. Visually on screen it seems exactly like what I replaced.
Both of the new units have a sticker label that I have seen in all the videos with that HC3Z-19A387-B part number.
Both came in unmarked unsealed packages.

Ah, the other half of the story... A lot of shysters on Ebay.
