I'm not sure you will benefit much from deleting GN other than knowing you now have more free space. The only reason to delete GN is for non-nav units to aid the update process as it runs out of space.

 

Then how do we update our maps? The 1 16 NA map is obviously available but how do those of us with 1 15 NA get updated???

 

Not everything available through unofficial links is actual made available by Ford in any sort of timely fashion. Ford had 2.3 on the 2017 Ford GT I believe since production (meaning late 2016), but it's only now "available" as an official update for all.

Currently, the only two ways to update maps for NA: Drop maps directly onto the APIM bypassing the OEM install (requires the know how), or, wait for Ford updates

I'm not sure if Ford is lazy or has actual reasons to not update the maps. It's a long install and requires a good battery charger or leaving the vehicle on for upwards of an hour. It's possible Ford didn't think the update through as the Maps partition may have to play musical chairs to get maps updated properly. Part of the security process is that the compressed files are copied onto your APIM and then installed, so the system has to have room not only for the current files, but the compressed ones too. So there's a musical chair process of any/all of repetitive-not-necessarily-in-this-order: delete, copy, unpack, replace, repeat.

 

AHHH, then its possible to update my sync3 similar to the way I update my Garmin? There are 3 files in the compressed map file. Map_new.img, map_ext_new.img and version.der. So maybe just copy the .img files to the APIM?

If you can ssh into your APIM and have root access... I don't see why not. scp away.
