Default Navigation, GPS updates

For the longest time, Navteq supplied all the map data to all GPS systems. The license fee was/is high. When Ford offers an updated map set, they incur licensing fees and pass those thru to us. Navteq is taking a beating with Google offering seemingly better maps. Keep in mind, there is no way for end users to know what portion of any map is updated with latest; only those that spot check (ex: is my street on the map??) will know what was updated. The updates are never the entire country, they publish what is verified at time of update release. As such, Ford is not to blame for any one street that is missing from Nav system.

No, I am not a Ford employee.

No, but they are to blame for giving a new owner 2 year old maps in their new vehicle. If you bought an iPhone app, and got two year old maps it would not be acceptable. But with a vehicle, somehow automakers think it is OK, since it has been done that way for years. It is just not acceptable that Ford does not supply maps that are reasonably current at time or purchase, or even just provide ONE free upgrade to new car buys... that simple!

We are both right. I indicated Ford is not to blame for a missing street, thats a fact since they don't control what the map supplier includes in any update. In fact, you can get the very latest map set that Navteq has and it might well not include any specific street. This includes streets never recorded as well as newer streets.

Well I think Ford should make sure they provide there customers with not a 2 year old map when you buy a new car. I think ford could/should do better.

I agree airplaneman. Ford is to Blame. They picked Navteq, and Navteq sucks.

Remember when Apple changed from the standard map offered being Google maps to their own generic Apple Maps? Remember how bad Apple Maps sucked?

Remember what they did? Let Google back in.

In this case Ford should let/encourage Google or Waze to make a maps app for Fords.

Dump Navteq like they dumped Microsoft.

To say its not Ford's fault is crazy talk. That's like if Ford put some super cheap Chinese tire on their new trucks that lasted 10,000 miles and rode like crap. Whose fault would that be? The tire company for making crappy tires or Fords choice for installing them?

Again they chose Navteq and they chose wrong.

I believe this is not factually correct. Do you have a reference to support?

Thanks,

I have read many good comments and certainly hope that you and other Ford employees pass these user suggestions along to appropriate departments for consideration.
Thanks.
Hi fishorfly,

Our Ford Social site was designed specifically for customers to get their voices heard. Our product engineers periodically monitors the site for enhancement ideas. I don't have access to the engineering team, so that is the best place to post request.

airplaneman777,

The version name does not include the year it was created. The vehicle is built with the most current version available from HERE. I recommend contacting them for information regarding release dates: http://www.navigation.com/is-bin/INT...nuItem=Contact There hasn't been anything new released at this time.

The newest HERE map for Canada/USA/Mexico I got on my $55 (CAD!!) is Q2/2015. And I got lifetime map updates for free too. Saying that HERE hasn't the newest maps isn't true. It's FORD who doesn't give them out for their customers. We are in the 21st Century! $149 (USD!!) for a map update every 2 1/2 years and "wondering" that customers missing their street they live in, isn't anymore customer service. If you need a NAVI unit for business, don't buy a build in unit. HERE has the newest maps for cellphones and cheap Chinese GPS units for free. Update every 3 month via download.

The FORD navigation units are so outdated and updates are only available WHEN Ford likes to give them out. Ford has one of the worst navigation software for people who need/like build in units. I had one in my 2015 Mustang. Terrible! And I am not starting now with what isn't available for Canada. Selling brand new cars with 2 year old NAVI maps is a bad joke!
Ford doesn't create the navigation information. They use Navteq, the same company that provides the map information to Garmin.
