I tried a method today that so far has worked and allowed Bluetooth to automatically connect each time I start the truck (5 times today). It involves deleting and re-pairing but from what I've seen elsewhere, the order in which you complete the steps is important.

1) Forget Sync in the Pixel Bluetooth menu
2) Restart Pixel

3) Delete the phone in Sync Bluetooth menu
4) Turn off truck, wait a few minutes, turn back on

*Apparently starting the each of the below steps on the Pixel first is essential to getting them to stay paired*

5) Open up Bluetooth menu on the Pixel, search for devices
6) Go the the Bluetooth menu in Sync, and select Add New Device

7) Select Sync in the bluetooth menu on the Pixel (you may have to refresh the bluetooth menu to see it)
8) Select your phone in the menu in Sync

You will then get pop-ups on both devices

9) Select Yes/Pair on the Pixel
10) Select Yes/Pair on the truck

I did the steps in this order, and like mentioned before, it has at least worked for the several I've driven in my truck today. Will report back if it stops working again.

My Pixel XL was doing the same thing. I signed up for google beta and am running Android 8.0. Much much better now. I also disabled absolute volume under developer options so SYCN 3 wouldn't lock out bluetooth volume control.
