I have the USB ready to go and will attempt the upgrade this weekend.
To answer your question, re-read the first post in this thread. I will paste the key portion below:

"I went on the ford support site, entered my vin, downloaded the latest update for my sync (Build 23088) moved the files to a usb as per their instructions, then installed on the truck.
It worked. I'm now not having any issues with my sync."

Quick question - I've tried a number of times to check for an OTA software update and every time it told me my software was up to date. Sync says I'm on Build 22251 but this morning I checked the website and it says I should download Build 23088. Any idea why the OTA update hasn't caught this? I'll try a USB installation this weekend and hopefully that'll fix the problem.
The Ford servers don't push an update out to every vehicle at once (there are tens of millions of Fords running Sync 3), and it takes a while to download the OTA update a bite at a time because your truck connects to WiFi only when it's on and for a short period after it's turned off. It will eventually update OTA but may take a while. Use USB if you want it sooner, and follow the instructions to the letter. During installation Sync will reboot once or twice... wait until it displays a persistent window that says it's done and you can remove the USB drive, before doing so. If you interrupt installation, it has to start over from the beginning.

FYI when doing the update, and the USB is in your truck, make sure to get to the very end, when it tells you it's complete before removing the usb and shutting off truck. Mine while updating had a pop up that made me think it might have been done, I waited and it continued to update...almost like it's 2 separate updates being installed.
Right. I've done this process a couple of times in the past and I remember getting some messages that made it appear it had finished, but it hadn't. Pretty sure I removed it too early once because I remember having to restart the whole process.

He mentioned the jailbreak option in a subsequent post, I just wanted to clarify.

I did the update yesterday, everything seems to have gone OK. I've only restarted my truck 2 or 3 times since but have not had the "confirmation" or other problems reappear yet. Fingers crossed.

Just want to reiterate once again that I got the weird screen messages noted above which seemed to indicate the process was finished, but it wasn't. A screen popped up about 30 minutes into the process that said something to the effect of "Part 1 has been completed, please turn off your vehicle and restart to complete part 2". But that screen only stayed up for a few seconds, then it continued to update. Had I not been driving and happened to glance at the screen at that particular moment I may not have even noticed it. After another 5 minutes or so I finally got the "Process complete, you may remove your USB drive" message along with more instructions about shutting off and restarting your vehicle. Apparently THAT'S when it's done.

I hate to even quote "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" because there is really no worse way to manage software, but in the case of Sync, I'll make an exception. Ford simply cannot get pretty much anything right, at all. Their software patches almost always make things worse. Only upgrade if you need to.

Was it a previous "upgrade" that caused your issues to begin with?

Well, it was broke. About every 3 out of 4 times I started my vehicle I got screens asking me to confirm Auto Install and something about WiFi connection. My preset radio screens would drop from 5 to 2. Occasionally the whole thing would go blank and I'd have to do a soft reset. This started happening to me maybe 2 or 3 months ago but I understand others have been dealing with it longer.

I have no idea what caused it. I hadn't done a USB upgrade in quite some time, at least a year but probably closer to 2. Perhaps something came OTA, I don't know.

Default So far so good

So I downloaded the new update from Ford 1 week ago and so far it appears to be the magic bullet that fixed all my issues. No more messages about turning on WiFi and auto updates every time I start my truck. No more black or blue screens requiring reset. Apple car play working as it’s supposed to. Only issue is every now and then my screen freezes on album artwork when playing my iPod classic but it still rolls to the next song so no big deal. Sync constantly indexes the iPod every time I start the vehicle so I have to browse and select playlists manually but I’ve used every version of sync and NONE of them ever worked right with my iPod so I gave up on that a long time ago. I hope any of the folks who let their dealers talk them in to replacing the system out of warranty for this software issue read this thread and go back to their dealers and demand their money back. I think Ford knew about this screw up a long time ago and all owners should have been notified about it and the fix should have been pushed out much sooner. Good luck to all with the new update !

It's been a week for me now and the only issue I've had was it "lost" my USB drive one time. I switched ports at a stop light and it still wouldn't recognize it. Perhaps it would have come back at the next startup but I was impatient and did a soft reboot while drving and it came back. But I haven't gotten any more auto-update messages and my preset radio screens are staying at 5.

I haven't done my update yet - I've got a long trip planned this weekend and will take advantage of the time then. Will report back on success or failure.
So you are saying you can do a USB update while driving, instead of just letting it sit and idle?
