I installed the OEM Kicker option in my 16 F-150 XLT when I had it and it sounded Great! Cost about $475 and it sounded almost as good as my B/O system in my current truck. If I went back to an XLT at some point, I would do it again.
You can order them online through some of the Ford dealers. It's plug and play in a 16 XLT. Just have to have the dealer turn it on or do it with Forescan.
Good luck!
OP - sound is very subjective. While the factory add-on systems sound great to some, they won't to others. I was unimpressed with both the Sony/Kicker system and the newer B&O. It all depends on your background and what you expect.
As far as the center dash speaker goes, just disconnect it. It borks up the soundstage as was mentioned.
Tasca indicates it is a speaker assembly, and in the diagram image, lists it as #5 in the illustration, which is both the speaker and the box. The amp is separate.
I ordered my Kicker unit from Banner Ford that had them posted on Ebay for $499. I offered them $475 shipped and they accepted. This was back in Oct 17, as when I originally posted a thread on it. There are two Kicker options. The unit I purchased was a plug and play utilizing the connector rear driver side being the pillar cover. Model number listed below. The other option requires running power to your battery.
I wanted a clean OEM look. Also as other have stated the quality of sound is subjective, however it was perfect for me for the cost. When I sold the truck I removed it i in just a few minutes.
Model #VGL3Z 18808A Seen a few posted today for $562-$585.

Reason: Update
I tried to fit my JL MicroSub behind the seat tonight, and it's definitely a no-go. It's just too big to fit in that small space.
So, it looks like I'll be ordering a Rockford Fosgate PS-8 and giving it a try. $270 on Ebay with free delivery in 3-4 days.
I was going to go with the Ford Kicker unit, but they are just too much money for what you get. Even used they are $400 or more, and the wiring is normally missing.

Is it a depth issue? Someone makes a kit that pushes the bottom of the rear seat out for more comfortable seating. You could easily add spacers behind the backrest brackets to push the top out as well.
I think you'll be pleased enough. I drove a 12 inch Punch Power at 260wrms, that was a good match for a 400x4 driving door speakers (100wrms/channel), with the sub in the trunk. Unless you go insane with the power level on the JL's. I thought I'd want more power in the future, hence the 600wrms speaker, but for rocking it out in a vehicle, 600wrms total is damn good juice. Anything more is just show. dB gets too high for regular listening, and vehicles have gotten quieter.
I installed the sub on Saturday, and I must say I'm impressed with the output. Fills in the bottom end perfectly, have the gain turned way down so it's not overpowering.
I'll be installing the JL 6.5s this weekend, keeping the stock system in place. Doing the tweeters too since I have some JL ones.

Hello! I'm hoping you're still active on the forum, I realize this is an old thread. I really want a sub to fit behind the rear seat of my 2013 and it looks like you have a solution. Do you have instructions/photos? Thanks!
Check out the stereo/audio page on this forum https://www.f150forum.com/f30/ and you’ll find all kinds of options, ideas and advice. I personally put the RF-8 behind my back seat. It fits just fine, and depending on the song, has decent bass
