I have a 16 Lariat without the upgraded Sony system. It lacked bass and I didn't want to spend $1250 for an 8" kicker sub and small amp. I went to my local car audio shop and they custom built a ported enclosure which fits under the rear seat. It has a 10" Rockford Fosgate sub and I have a Rockford 400watt amp mounted beneath the front passenger seat. This thing rocks and it was only $800 installed!
Its use is for Sync voice responses, and for Driver only audio selection.

Is that also the case with non-Sony NAV 8" Display system in which is utilized with My Sync responses & Driver only system selection? Would that also explain why the factory center channel speaker is 8 ohm while all the factory door speakers, front & rear are all 4 ohm?
When I was doing my research on which speakers to use one of my criteria was no additional amp. This affected my choice of speakers. The Polk DB series are good (not the best) speakers and work well without any additional amps being installed on the OEM system. This as well as their price point made the decision very simple on which speakers to use.
As I mentioned in an earlier thread my total investment to this point is only $200. If your considering installing an amp you may want to use different speakers even though the Polk DB series will work well with or without an amp.
I am very pleased with the results. However for those upgrading just the speakers don't expect results of a $1000 upgrade for only $200 of investment as you will be disappointed with the results.
Instead of an amp, would an aftermarket head unit make it sound a little better ?

Yes most definitely. I tested my upgrade after each individual piece just to not get to the end and have a problem and not know where to start.
The first thing I did before installing the amp or sub was change out the door speakers and test them. It was a marked improvement. However, amp em up and its 5x better. I used Kicker KS speakers and didn't break the bank and was thrilled. I had about $800 in my upgrade DIY and am thrilled with it. I was quoted 2k for the same setup at local stereo shops. Took all day (12 hrs) one Sat to install.
How was the amp install ? Fairly simple ? Don't know the easiest way of going about an amp install
