single "clunk" when starting the engine
#51
So I met with the Ford engineer. When I arrived at the dealership, they had my truck and another new 2017 ecoboost from the lot on the rack. The new 2017 did the same noise, and with the trucks in the air, it was easy to tell that the noise is coming from the transfer case. On the new 2017, the driveshaft did move on one of the engine starts he did on that truck. So in the end, its a "characteristic" of the truck. He didnt say it was normal, but since a new one from the lot does it, its currently listed as a "characteristic". What i asked him to find out was WHY the transfer case makes that noise, and he said he would send some mails to see what he could find out. Thats it for now.
I haven’t taken mine in because I knew it would be the same thing. I’ve learned what a hassle it can be to repeatedly take a vehicle to the dealer just to have them say “unable to reproduce”. I’ll wait till it is obviously broken to take it to the dealer.

Had this clunk on my 2018 5.0L since day one. Going to ask the service mgr about this today. If he knows something, he'll tell me, unlike some others I've dealt with.
I always figured it has to do with the auto start/stop.

Just talked to a Ford technician at another dealership where I went for the oil change. This technician was much friendlier than the ones at Montmorency Ford. When I explained the nature of the sound and mentioned that video and the driveshaft making the move at start, he recalled that he did see a couple of trucks with the same behavior. He said that for now they consider this "normal" but Ford seems to be aware of it. He was not sure but he mentioned that it could be a characteristic of the new 10-speed transmission. At least he said that he only saw it with 10-speed ones.
Clearly there is no solution yet. I think the owners should put some pressure on Ford to take it a bit more seriously.

Flee150, is yours a 10 speed transmission and 4x4? Can you do a video recording so we can hear the sound? I'm not too worried about videoing the driveshaft moving, because it may not move visibly, but the clunk or thunk should be coming from the transfer case area if its a 4x4. If its NOT a 4x4, that would be very interesting.

For anyone reading this and feel its the same issue, i need recordings of the sound, i also need to know if yours is a 4x4 and a 10 speed tranny. Nothing will ever get fixed if Ford isnt made officially aware of the issue, and we have to continue to escalate the issue until we get a solid explanation of why it happens, or we get a fix. This is NOT NORMAL BEHAVIOR for a truck or a transmission. Dealerships and vehicle manufacturers call things like this "normal" or a "characteristic" if another vehicle on the lot does the same thing, and that's just a way to blow you off or keeping them from having to do investigative work to determine where the issue actually is and why it's happening. Think about it this way, service advisors, and most, if not all mechanics are paid COMMISSIONS to upsell services to you for your vehicle. If you are under warranty, they dont make commissions for those repairs, so unless you have a truly dedicated mechanic and a dealership thats is willing to ALLOW the tech to spend time working on a vehicle to figure out the problem, your problem is an annoyance. Like my service advisor mentioned to me, he was told to "just get that truck out of here". Why? Because I didnt make the dealership money is my guess. Matter of fact, I was told to not bring my truck back there again.
