Recently, I've been having an intermittent problem with my cameras. Regardless of which mode I'm in (rear, birds eye, front, etc.), I only get what appears to be a shorted out signal (see picture), or sometimes a fuzzy image that freezes up. Has anyone else experienced this? Any thoughts? Seems to be that since it affects all of the cameras, it could be a short or a loose connection in the dash rather than at a specific camera.
I don’t have the 360 but when my rear camera acted up and had the screen like that I needed to replace the IPMB. Processes the image before it gets sent to the screen.
If it’s under warranty take it to the dealer so they can throw parts at it.
If it’s out of warranty then try checking for loose connections or corrosion at the IPBM, in your 22 pin mirrors, front camera and the tailgate connector. If that doesn’t work you can try forscan by doing a self test then resetting the IPMB and see if that fixes it. I tried to take the negative off the battery as well but that didn’t fix my situation either. That’s all the free stuff you can do before having to spend $$$ or take it to the dealer.
Multiple threads on here pointed me to that module so I went with that and my issue has been resolved.
There are a couple part numbers for the IPMB so if you choose to replace it then you’ll need to verify your part number. Take the top speaker/tray off over your Sync 3 screen and you should see a 6x4 inch silver square in behind. That’s the module. There is a picture of one in my thread but yours will be different because you have the 360 package and I don’t.
Update: Thank goodness I bought an extended warranty! I'm at 41,XXX, so factory warranty was out. Was planning on following 16F150's advice by ordering an IPMB from eBay, but looked through my paperwork and realized I had bumper to bumper to 100k (thought I just had powertrain), so I took it to the dealer where they are throwing parts at it. So far, they've replaced the rear camera (didn't fix it), the wiring harness in the tailgate (didn't fix it), and have now ordered a new APIM module. Apparently there are LOTS of issues with these APIM's, and they run about $1,000. Love the truck, but not impressed with Ford's Quality. Will report back if/when they figure it out.
Good info. Do dealers keep these cameras on hand so they can swap them out that day to troubleshoot? My rear camera is acting up, but everything else works fine. Front camera and 360 degree are all working just rear that isn't.
Glad to hear you have that extended warranty! If sync 3 works as usual and it’s just the cameras that act up I’m still thinking it’ll be the IPMB that needs replacing but if they are footing the bill then just let them do their thing.
to Metacortex, I cant see a dealer keeping one in stock to troubleshoot with. Best best would be to check that connection at the tailgate connector for corrosion/dirt/full insertion. If it still doesn’t work and you’re under warranty take it to the dealer. If it’s not under warranty still then I would ask a family member or a buddy with a similar year F150 that has a backup camera and do a tailgate swap to see if it works. Best way I can think of before a dealer charges you hundreds in diagnostics while they throw parts at it on your dime.
Finally got it fixed today (knock on wood). Here's the final summary, numbered by visit:
Visit 1) Diagnosed it to be the rear camera itself. Replaced the camera, which they had on hand (FL3Z-19G490-D @ $305.11); however, this didn't fix it and they ordered a tailgate harness.
Visit 2) Replaced the tailgate harness (JL3Z-14A412-B @ $79.93). Didin't fix it and ordered an APIM.
Visit 3) Replaced the APIM (HP5Z-14G371-CCA @ $646.49). Didn't fix it. By this time they said the extended warranty wasn't gonna approve them for anything else, so they said Ford would to eat it and ordered an Image Processing Module.
Visit 4) Replaced the Image Processing Module (GL3Z-19H405-E @ $???). This finally seems to have fixed it.
The total amount billed to the extended warranty company was $1,615.56. Thankfully I paid nothing (other than my time and mileage going back/forth and waiting for it). What a disaster.
For anybody getting a screen like OP, this solved it for me:
I had it occurring about half the time with the 360 setup. I removed the top tray, pulled the IPMB out (3 nuts, bottom one is tricky to get to, I used a 1/4” drive deep socket on a ratchet), unplugged it and kind of blew out the connections. You could get some dielectric grease for added reliability but I didn’t use it. I also took apart the case for the IPMB to see if anything looked strange on the circuit card, but it looked pretty normal. The piece of thermal paste/sponge was a little off center so I adjusted it to be centered on the chip it was contacting and closed the case back up. Anyway, it works awesome now. Hope this helps someone.
Edit after a few months: problem slowly returned. But, I determined the issue was probably due to humidity from condensation on/around the IPMB case. It seemed to be much worse during the cold so it made sense, since cold temps alone shouldn’t mess with computer hardware. Anyway, couple of silica gel packets in the case and I believe the problem is solved. Going on a few weeks with zero issues, will update.
