Default RAM BS Article.

Let's do the math:

Ram Ecodiesel; 30 gallons @ $2.92 average gallon diesel price = $87.60 Claims 29 HWY.

Ford 2.7 Ecoboost 30 gallons @ $2.10 gallon average per regular= $54.60
Claims 26 HWY

The Ram will hypothetically get 90 more miles per gallon.
The Ford would require 3.46 gallons more to reach the Rams 870 miles on 30 gallons of diesel.

Ram $87.60
Ford $54.60
Plus $7.26 to cover the 3.46 extra gallons to match the Ram.

The Ram uses $87.60 to drive 870 miles
The Ram uses $61.86 to drive 870 miles

The Ford saves $25.74 to travel the same distance !!
Plus the cost of buying the diesel engine!!
and more power!!

Is Ram smoking rope?

That distinction is what is lost on the public.

Up to this point, a layman buyer considering two gasoline-fueled vehicles could simply compare "mileage" because the true cost of going from A to B was directly proportional to gas mileage because the cost of the fuel was always the same (both vehicles use the same regular gasoline). So, buyers are conditioned to only look at mileage.

However, when comparing gas and diesel, the true cost of getting from A to B is, as you have outlined, is the fuel mileage times the price of that fuel.

Ram gets to taut (diesel) mileage and the buying public assumes they will save money. Bad assumption as it turns out.

“Fuel efficiency is at the top of truck buyers’ priorities, and Ram is the recognized benchmark for the industry,” said Bob Hegbloom, President of Ram Trucks. “Twenty-nine miles per gallon cuts through the clutter. Ram invested in powertrain technologies and those are paying real dividends in the wallets of our customers.”
Yeah, that is pretty much a flat out lie when you factor in the cost of the diesel engine, they higher price of diesel fuel, plus the higher maintenance cost...

Math? You expect consumers to do MATH? Most of them are sold a vehicle based on a monthly payment they can ALMOST afford and have no clue what they're actually paying for the truck, asking them to figure cost-per-mile will probably make them bleed through the ears.

A friend of mine at the FD just bought the EcoDiesel and we compared vehicles. It's a nice truck. I forget what package he got. Longhorn maybe? Either way, the interior was really nice and had some nice touches to it. I was just as impressed with his truck as he was with mine. I like mine more, obviously, but it really isn't bad.

Now on the other hand....this Chevy Colorado business. Are you kidding me? And that Nissan Titan. Oh. My. God.

Neat calculator. I plugged in $1.73 for reg and $2.55 for diesel (current in my area), a vehicle getting 18 gas MPG compared to 26 diesel MPG is still cheaper. Math is amazing. More people should learn it.
