Question about Payload
Hello,
I have a question about payload.
I am considering a new F150 but am a little confused about what exactly is Payload.
I understand towing to a certain extent.
My understanding so far is that F150's that come with the Max Tow Package are the one's that have the claimed Payload of 3270lbs I think it is, is that correct?
If that is correct, then what about other F150's? What is their Payload.
Does it depend on what GVWR is listed on the Sticker Price?
Ultimately, what I want to know is, how much weight can put in the bed of a F150? I know it will depend on what particular trim or engine I get, I think?
I would not really tow much but would want to get a truck that has the maximum capacity as far as putting things in the bed area (hope that makes sense).
Would getting a 5.0 be better then getting a 2.7 Eco ( I would probably want to get the 5.0 regardless) as far as payload goes or putting the maximum weight in the bed area?
Does it depend on the suspension? Would getting a 4x4 be better for handling a big payload?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

First lets talk about what "payload" is, or more specifically, the "payload rating". This is the number listed on the little yellow sticker on the driver's door jamb. It represents the amount of weight that can be added to the EMPTY truck before reaching the GVWR. So anything and everything (besides fuel) that goes in or on the truck (including the driver) reduces the "payload"
Max tow alone will not get you the max payload. What you are wanting is the HDPP (heavy duty payload package) And still you will likely be far below the advertised "max payload" depending on the options you get.
Every option you pick over a Reg. Cab 8ft bed XL trim will reduce payload.

you can got to this thread and view the spreadsheet in the OP's signature:

this will give you an idea of how options and trim packages affect payload numbers.

Thanks for your quick reply SixShooter14
Let me ask this then, how much average weight do you think a XLT 2WD 5.0 Crew Cab Short Bed can take in the bed?
And do would you say that a XL STX Crew Cab 5.0 4x4 be able to handle more then the XLT 2WD?
Let's say either one does not have the Heavy Duty Package.

and Rick (poster above) is correct. You also must consider the GAWR (front and rear)
Now let me ask, what would you guys get?
1) XL STX Crew Cab 5.0 4x4 Short Bed or
2) XLT 2WD 5.0 Chrome Package 302a Crew Cab Short Bed or
3) XLT 2WD 2.7 Sport 302 Crew Cab Standard Bed 6.5'
Currenlty prices between these 3 are very close.
I am leaning toward the XL 4x4, although I would like some of the creature comforts of a 302a package.

Mine is a 2017 XLT 3.5L EcoBoost FX4 Max Tow pkg (see below) and my payload is 1778.
Another member here has one very similar to mine except he has HDPP and I believe his payload is right at 2400.
What is it you are trying to do with said truck?

If you want to know how much different options will cost you in payload, look at https://www.fleet.ford.com/truckbbas...load_SB_v5.pdf.
Keep in mind that the calculated payload is approximate, particularly if you're going to carry anything in or on the truck (recovery gear, first aid kit, extra LED lights, aftermarket skid plates, your three-gallon coffee mug, your dogs, golf clubs, skis, whatever) on a regular basis, and the best way to get a true "available payload" number is to gas up with all of your accessories and go to a scale (with a full tank of fuel and yourself in the car). I'm planning to do that at some point after I get my aftermarket bumper and winch installed, as that's a significant variation to factory weight.
