I had an odd occurrence that might be related to your start engine issue. I have a 16 Lariat. Two days ago I walked up to the vehicle to get in. Grabbed the handle and the auto unlock did not happen. Seemed like that 'pad' on the inside of the handle was broke. Tried it several times, even attempted to cycle the lock using the small 'pad' on the outside of the handle. Nothing, great broke already.

Well it turned out the FOB was resting against the Iphone in my pocket. I pulled out the FOB to try the unlock button and now the 'pad's responded. Was it interference? Maybe, I now always keep the two in separate pockets, not have the problem since. But that is not proof of interference.

I have read where in some vehicles, the cheap USB chargers plugged into the 12v lighter socket has triggered false check engine diagnostics.

Are you just pushing the button and releasing it? That'll put it in "Accessory" mode.

To start it, push and HOLD the button (until it starts).

I imagine you already know this, and have tried it as such, but figured I'd throw it out there just in case.

On my 2016, after pressing on the brake pedal, you only have to press and release the start button. No need of holding the start button.

UPDATE: 2nd time in 24 hours. This time it was sitting in my driveway overnight, went out and it wouldn't start. Called the dealership and they wanted me to NOT pull a battery cable so they could see any possible codes. Had it towed in and they have it. I am in a lovely 2012 Fusion loaner with my head crammed into the roof. Not a happy camper right now.

I appreciate the input from everyone. I have a link to a YouTube video below showing exactly what I am doing. Today I was at home so I was able to get the 2nd fob to make sure the batteries weren't dead on the remote, and it shouldn't matter anyway because I had the key in the backup slot anyways.

There has to be something that is going haywire with a sensor/switch/or software that is telling the computer the truck is running and not to crank. That's All that I can think of.

The truck will normally crank until it starts as long as the key is in the vehicle and your foot is on the brake. It only goes to accessory mode when you don't press the brake pedal.

i know exactly what is wrong, my 16 is in the shop for it right now, its the transmission range position sensor, its internal in the transmission, they will have to drop the pan to get to the sensor, they have had mine for a week today, they said if all goes well i should get it back tomorrow, it took them a while to find the problem because of how intermittend the problem was, it took 4 days of them driving it too act up with their computer hooked up to it. MIne was also towed in. must be a bad batch of sensors? who know,

I hope that is what it is, and I hope they find it quickly. If they tell me it is fine , I will pass that info to them.

I find it amazing that the forum members know more about these vehicles and can diagnose things more quickly and efficiently than the techs a lot of times.

The Hive-mind knows all.

Be sure to report back what was wrong. I have 2013 Flex and have had zero issues with the push button start; and the rest of the car for that matter.

They should all be forced to read this forum during their lunch breaks. Unlike a lot of you that are probably reading it during your work time.

While we have this thread going,, just in case others later are having the same problem..

Let's talk about what to check.. If you use the fob to remote start it doesn't require your foot on the brake, so if it starts this way but not the normal foot on the brake way points to the brake switch being bad. If neither works might be the gear shift switch so try it in netural and wiggle the shifter. If neither of these work than most likely the computer thinks the engine is already running?
