just one question how do you convert an Eco Boost Which relies on high pressure direct gasoline injection to run on CNG? what am I missing?
I believe the CNG systems are the same as the propane conversions for direct injected engines. With the propane conversion systems, you have to leave the gasoline system in tact, and you are always running a little gas to keep the injectors cooled and lubricated. If you didn't have a little gas going through, the injectors would be toast.
In propane converted EcoBoost motors, you run about 5% gasoline along with the alternative fuel, and I believe it is the same for natural gas conversions.
On my Eco Boost, the natural gas is injected like a port injection system. The nozzle tip is drilled into the intake manifold just upstream of the intake valves. I also have 2 additional injectors just downstream of the throttle body that only open under higher boost conditions.
I was told the gasoline direct injectors are shut off completely when running on Nat Gas and that the HP pump is also shut off. But, the in tank LP pump still runs to circulate fuel to the HP pump to keep it lubricated.
My system always starts on gasoline then switches over to Nat Gas. Even if it's only a 10 min trip across town. In a typical month I will use approx 30 liters of gasoline (1 liter per day/2 starts per day and approx 2 kms driven depending on warm up time).
So far in 106000 kms I have not experienced any Nat Gas or gasoline related issues.
Thanks for sharing. I know nothing about alternative fuel vehicles but am always curious. I'm seeing more charging ports popping up at restaraunts and such for EVs. Unfortunately the only CNG station in my town is reserved for city busses and state vehicles. Good for you for thinking outside the box.

Didn't see much on propane conversions for late model trucks, so I thought I'd share a photo of my 2015 Lariat Super Crew FX4 with the 5.0L that has been converted to run on propane. I must admit that I'm biased because I work for a propane company, but I love this truck on propane!

Years ago, having the conversion allowed you to skip congestion control measures in the cities.

Can't speak to today's fuel injected engines...but back during the gas crisis of the late 70s I converted my 1976 GMC van to run dual fuel. One electrical switch and a cable to push or pull changed it from running on gasoline to running on propane. Holley carburetor on the van; the propane carburetor sat on top of the Holley. The van had a 36 gallon gas tank and with an 80 gallon propane tank I could travel a long ways before needing refueling.
