Guys, it’s the 2.7. The USA 2.7 trucks almost always have poor payload because Ford builds them lighter duty and the GVWR is 400 lbs lower than an equivalent truck with 5.0 or 3.5, thus the payload is about 400 lbs lower as well. 6600 GVWR vs 7000

all else equal higher trims have lower payload because their options weigh more and payload is nothing more than GVWR minus trucks weight as it rolls off the line (and adding weight of a full fuel tank). But, like, my lariat crew cab 4x4 is still 1,759 because I didn’t get the 2.7 or the pano sunroof

In the real world what matters is your gvw, keep your actual gross truck weight (what it shows on a scale) below your GVWR. So in the real world how much gas you have in the tank counts and matters because gas has weight. Everything else counts too. You, all passengers, aftermarket bed liners or covers or caps, tools, the dog, everything.

I think the more accurate statement would be, the 3,200 rating is a RCLB

Thanks for this. I was wondering why the 2.7 was rated lower. Surely the 2.7 engine is the lightest so I couldn't figure out why it was lower rated. So the extra payload package that I got ( 2.7, 36 gal fuel tank) just takes the vehicle back to a "normal" GVW weight of 7,000 lbs then? My payload rating is 1891 lbs. So this GVW difference of 6600 or 7,000 is the HD frame vs lighter frame?

Yes the 2.7 payload package puts the truck back up to match a 5.0 or 3.5 build. The optional payload package (heavy duty payload package, HDPP) on the 5.0/3.5 trucks adds 800 lbs to GVW though it's also quite uncommon especially in the US

And no it's not just the frame, but Ford doesn't come out and list every little thing I don't think either. It's likely a different frame but also axles, suspension, whatever else IDK that's really into the nitty gritty

The 2.7 is 2% lighter (9lbs) lighter than the 3.5(eco).

Your last sentence is correct. 7000lb GVWR trucks get the middle weight frame, denoted by Ford as HD. The exception to this would be those configurations where Ford only produced two frame thicknesses, in which both the 7000 and 7800 GVWR trucks get the HPP frame:
