Supposedly, from word of mouth, so no proof here... But supposedly there is something in the ECU which will record reflashes to see if and when the ECU was reflashed by a tuner. And you don't have to dig deep for it, it was designed like this for that exact reason. You reflash the ECU, and it's logged. And it something that can't be hidden or reset. As in, putting the stock tune back doesn't hide the fact that it had been flashed. IMO it sounds like something that I'm surprised wasn't done years ago after turners came out, and they could easily do it.

ford ids system can check number of key cycles and distance driven since last pcm calibration. best bet if your engine blows is to just unplug the tuner from the bash and dont mention it. engines blow for all sorts of reasons and unless your a D**K to the service adviser noone is even going to check for a tune anyway. priority is to fix it and kick it out. does a mechanic care if the rod hanging out the side of the block was caused by a tune? most likely issue is they reflash your pcm following the repair and your tuner gets locked out cause it no longer matches.

BlackBoost your right, takes me 30 seconds with a laptop to see when you reflashed. cant see what it was, just when. and to ford thats a big red flag

What are some quality tune companies to look into to explorer this more? To be honest I don't know much about them. I do know that if I went with a tune I would probably buy the extra warranty as a "just in case".

The only experience with tunes I have had was I had a buddy that tuned his leased Porsche and when he turned it back it there was no issue and the car was still within the warranty. I do realize though that all companies are different.

Having been new to tuning (always drove Toyota’s prior and not much demand there) I didn't fully understand the ins and outs, the major players, etc. My initial thought was that I didn't want to void my warranty, however, after doing a lot of research and talking to others I decided it was something I truly wanted to do. My opinion is that manufactures leave power on the table for future marketing and at the same get hamstrung by regulations. Personally, I want access to the performance the engine can safely make.

I realize there's a small risk of being on the hook if something major does go wrong - That's something I'm willing to accept and be accountable for end of story.

Having had my LMS tune now for the past few days I honestly feel like the truck runs better than it ever has. I couldn't be happier.

What I don't understand is the hysterics that the same old members display anytime the topic comes up. It almost seems as though they try and make it into some sort of moral debate.

I agree with one of the other posters that they should stick to bloviating about who makes the better floor mat...
LMS very reputable! You are in good hands there...enjoy

Half of the commentary around here comes from folks who have never ventured in the direction of a tune.

I have tuned every car, race bike I have ever owned....zero issues if you do your homework

5* offers a warranty with their tunes, but you'll probably never need it since they don't really give you any gains to cause trouble. They are the only ones I know of that offer an additional powertrain warranty with their tunes.

For me personally, any tuning issues or questions I'm going to Livernois.

Another stupid question for an F150 rookie, so I purchase the tune from let's say 5*, they mail it to me? Where do I take the truck to get it installed? Any place that has a dyno? Thanks

You purchase a tuner from SCT or from 5* directly. Once you get it you plug it in to the truck to get your PCM code. Once you get the code, you send that to 5* then they email you the tunes. Load the tunes from your email onto the tuner. Plug in the tuner to your truck and load the tune to your truck.

Some tuners also come with "canned" tunes that are not specific to your truck, but claim HP/TQ boosts. A "personalized" tune would benefit you more. Dyno is only necessary if you want to verify the gains the tuner company said you would get.

Options for increasing hp and tq for 2.7

OP:
From personal experience, a tune will give you the best increase in HP and TQ. for the money. I would recommend Livernois. I've been running their tunes for 10,000 miles now, they were installed with 3,000 miles on the truck.

I spent a good deal of time researching when trying to decide what to do much like yourself and could not find even once where Ford did not honor a warranty due to a Livernois tune. Not saying there isn't one but I would challenge the folks that say your warranty is void by showing me where this has happened.

It has happened several times . I know of one personally and others second hand but reliable. If your engine blows and you had a tune its a strong chance warranty could be denied. Ford has been doing this more in last few years and after the. 6.0 diesel issues.

Here is a post from a few years ago that may help. Of course if you never have an engine blow it wont be an issue. And the ford warranty is a limited warranty. The federal law is onky intended to cover use of non oem parts of equivalent design, specs etc to.oem.

https://www.f150forum.com/f70/thinki...coboost-84773/

That being said, if you accept risks and use a main stream tuner, the chances of engine damage due to a.tuner is fairly low but possible. And a tune is the most power per $. Livernois is not the most powerful but they should be as safe as any other major tuner.
