Default OEM backup camera installation

I'm looking into installing an OEM backup camera into my 2015 XL and hopefully documenting the process here. I know there have been many threads on the subject but the community knowledge seems to be spread across many threads and I'd like to consolidate it all here.

Hardware:
  • backup camera (19G490A)
  • tailgate handle (43400)
Process:
  • Swap current handle for one with a backup camera installed.
  • Run wiring harness from camera along existing wiring harness from tailgate to the cab.
  • Terminate wiring harness behind the 4 inch display.
  • Use FORscan to modify two addresses to enable and calibrate the camera.
Questions:

1) Any suggestions on how to mount the camera in the handle? Perhaps the bracket takes care of that?

2) Whats the best way to get power to the camera? Anyone with a stock camera know where the power line hooks in?

3) How would I get the wiring to end up in the cab? There is a youtube video (search "Add Back-up Camera 15-up F-150") that indicates a rubber grommet under the cab, but in my truck this hole is a metal plate.

4) Thanks to @DanMc85 and @Gordy49913 it looks like we can enable the camera with FORscan including fully functional lines, magnifying glass, and predictive steering. Is that correct?

5) Any tips on building the harness? I assume that can't be OEM'd from Ford as it is probably integrated into the existing hardware on trucks with backup cameras from the factory.

Kits

I've seen the camera source kits that are available. However, I've read several reports that you can't see the bumper, the zoom and black lines don't work, and the display interface module they provide has had some issues when using your turn signals. I personally would trust the FORscan mods over using this interface module. Also, it looks like different cameras are available based on the build date of your truck. There is no mention which camera the camera source kit uses.

From the factory the truck I bought 2015 F150 XL had nothing from the cab back to and including the tailgate to install the rear camera. This truck has the 4.2 inch screen. When I was done I had a fully working camera with all the guide lines and the zoom feature works.
One of the first things I added to the truck was the bed lights, at the time it gave me the first plug for the camera which at the time I didn't know, just an empty plug up by the spare tire which I taped up to keep crud out.
When I decided to add the camera, much research on what was needed and looking under and inside the truck to see what was actually there. What I did find was the only place the wiring existed was inside the cab and out under the hood to 2 plugs on the driver side, only one of the plugs was needed for the camera, but figured that if I was going through this much trouble I decided to add the trailer lamp that is also on the tailgate handle.
The pins are not in the plugs under the hood on wires that are not used going to the rear of the truck, so those had to be added, both in the front plugs under the hood and the rear, can’t remember where I got the plug for the rear, I want to say it came with the truck in the glove box or it may have been part of the original cable at the rear of the truck before I swapped it out for the bed lighting.
All the wires come from the front of the truck, power, camera, lin network, trailer lamp, etc, the ground is at the back of the truck already.
The hardest part of this was installing the pins in the plug under the hood, not enough slack in the cables to get a clear view of the plugs while putting the pins in, second was running the wiring underneath the truck, I have the 36 gallon tank, so it takes out a long portion of the frame rail where the OEM cables are run. SO I just ran it over the gas tank and made sure it was fastened securely on both ends.
I will have to pull up the wiring diagrams again for all of this to include pin numbers.
This is what I used
FL3Z13E754A bed lighting kit
FL3Z-19G490-BA handle $37.00 this handle is for both the lamp and 2camera
FL3Z-19490_D Camera $124.00
FL3Z-15500-A trailer lamp $55.00
FL3Z-14A412-D Tailgate wiring $29.00
DU2Z-14474-DA Female pin 1.5 mm $5.32 a piece, 5 to a bag
EU2Z-14421-CA Male pin 1.5 mm, I did not buy these, I had enough extra pins laying around to use.

Tesa Wire Loom Harness Tape, bought off Amazon.
1/2 inch wire plastic loom, bought locally
4 conductor shielded cable from Home Depot.

I would very much like to know... HOW did you do the lights.

Only a few have reported doing this. And I am unable to find enough info on how to do it. The kid did not have instructions (other than goto a secure site to get it with an ID and P/W that I do not have).

Anything you can provide will help. Greatly appreciate it.

This will be greatly appreciated by those of us with limited clue and ability to follow instructions to make up for it.

Thank you.

The lights are easy, basically you unplug the old wiring cable for your brake/tail lights, back up lights, license plate and plug in the new cable. Naturally you do one plug at a time, take the old cable down and put the one up as you go. Then you install the lights plugging them in and the switch in the bed before you stick both in the openings.
Then you use the Forscan computer program to change one bit in the trucks computer to enable them. Otherwise your stuck going to a dealer and seeing if anyone is smart enough to use IDS to turn them on, I would hope by now they are up to speed.
The only question would be if your truck had the wiring, I took a chance when I did mine, not knowing.
The lights would work when you opened the doors without the programing. But not with the switches either in the cab or the bed.

I posted a step by step process just a couple weeks ago, complete with pictures. You do not have to bring the video wires into the cab. I found it much more convenient to tap into them on top of the LF fender well.

Once the video wires are brought to the back you could plug and play any camera you wish but I chose a license plate mounted camera for now.

For power I used a backup light.

When I tried to search for the parts... I went everywhere but where I liked to be...

Here's the parts Ford OEM parts list for what I figure to be a 13th gen (2015-18).

FL3Z-19G490-D = Rear Camera - Ford
FL3Z-9943400-BA = Handle - Ford
FL3Z-15500-A = Lamp - Ford
FL3Z-14A412-D = Wiring Assembly - Tailgate - Ford
DU2Z-14474-DA = Terminal - Ford (female per Gordy49913)
EU2Z-14421-CA = Terminal - Ford (male per Gordy49913)

Working on the rest.

And you are right pantalanaga11... we need a central place... to make it at least simple to find out what you need... if not easy.

I have added the LED bed lights and in the process checked the tailgate connections (only two wires) so will need to run wire from end to end.

learn another thing today. When you order the parts and the site asks for VIN... take into consideration that it may not match. Being a first timer in this and pretty much never bothering to upgrade any other vehicle I have owned.. I first said to go by the "experts" and that was not my choice. So ultimately the vendor decided to cancel order and have me start again. Which is better. Now I want to confirm the parts before ordering.

Since I cannot leverage the process the parts stores use successfully (VIN matching).

Living in So. FL... it occurred to me that the cable I got may be best if I use marine grade to handle salt water and humidity...

(this is useful for us beginners... when you order parts and they ask for a VIN, get one with the CAM already so when they "compare" it is good-to-go; THANKS Gordy49913)

Amazon Amazon

What do the experts here think?

Or is that what the Loom is for (1st time I have ever heard of such a thing)

Would adding the lamp mean more than the four cables for the camera (from what I gather, two are for the camera, one power and one ground = comes out to 4).

Please translate this to "simple" ;-)
All I can figure out is that we need to add pins to each end and then what... use the harness already there? because later you say that running cable was 2nd hardest thing after adding pin in front (under the hood).

All the wires come from the front of the truck, power, camera, lin network, trailer lamp, etc, the ground is at the back of the truck already.
I see LIN network and wonder about that... does that mean we need five cables and not four like I mentioned above.
I will have to pull up the wiring diagrams again for all of this to include pin numbers.
On the above... many of us hope that you found it... this is a key driver to a successful "factory install".

For the other items... not the Ford OEM parts... I put this list together for your own searching (you can use these to search Amazon to review the items and decide for yourself and even use to google other online sources to help narrow down your findings). These are just my choices (living in So Fl with heat, humidly and salt water); it DOES NOT mean it works for you. Use it to help in your search.

To source loom, tape and shrink tubing:
Ancor 453501 Marine Grade Electrical Split Loom (1/2-Inch Diameter, Black, 10-Feet)
Coroplast 1238x Premium High Heat Reflective Wire Harness Tape 19mmX25m
Tesa's Most Advanced High Heat Harness Tape 51036 Mercedes, BMW, Audi, VW
Ancor Marine Grade Electrical Heat Activated Adhesive Lined Shrink Tubing

To source cable to run from the back to the front:
Stinger SMRCA4 2 Channel 13 -Foot Waterproof RCA Interconnect Cable
and/or
16/2 AWG Duplex DC Marine Wire - Red/Yellow - Made in the USA
(choose 10 feet unless you want/need more)

Want to be able to remove tail gate... may need this:
TinFmoon 4 Pin Way Waterproof Electrical Connector Plug for Car Auto Pack of 3 Sets
MUYI 1 Kit 4 Pin Way Waterproof Electrical Connector 1.5mm Series Terminals Heat Shrink
HiseNook 5 Kit Waterproof Electrical Wire Cable 4 Pin Way Connector Plug (Package includes 5 sets)

Extra tools and or stuff to make it easy/simple/quick (more so if you have plans to do more for friend and family):
Lisle 57780 Terminal Tool for Ford
3M 05203 Marine Adhesive/Sealant 5200, White / 3 oz.

And if you do have a few to make:
Ancor 154510 Marine Grade Electrical Flat Tinned Ribbon Boat 4-Cable Wiring (16-Gauge, 100-Feet)
Ancor Marine Grade Electrical Flat Trailer Tinned Boat Cable
