Default Now or later?

Hello,
I am new to this forum and will be a new truck owner. I am planning on buying a 16-17 XL. I will only be doing light towing,

My questions to the forum are.
1. What options should I make sure to get From dealer versus ones that might be better to do aftermarket
2. What is the biggest waste of money mistake most newbie truck owners make.
3. 16 or 17?

Not getting at least a Lariat 502A and then spending lots of money to get all the neat stuff..

If you dont need technology or dont have the extra money you should go with a STX with 20s.

2016 F150 XLT supercrew with the 2.7 ecoboost and 302A will get you alot for the money and will have the most rebates and best price.

If you are considering a 2017 and money isn't a issue go with a 502A (lariat) or higher

Money is a bit of an issue. It would be nice to keep things at or near 40k

1) Read the forum.
2) Read the forum.
3) Depends if you want to be a guinea pig for the new transmission. If you're buying the 5.0, you're fine I believe. 16 will be a lot cheaper now.

$40k won't buy much of a 17, but a 16 XLT with rebates maybe.

Hmmmm, here are some things to consider it has taken me 30 years of truck buying to know.

1) don't buy an XL unless your daily driver is something else

2) the more "goodies" the less reliable the truck will be...pick wisely

3) never buy a first gen year (doesn't really apply to the 2017 except for TT3.5/10sp)

4) buying a leftover 16 will save you 10k+ but in 3-4 years the difference in price between a 16 or 17 will only be 3k. That's just how it works, you will pay extra to be at the front of the line.

5) get the biggest gear ratio you can. It's a truck and the impact to mpg is small.

6) a 4WD is not that much more and you'll get it back when you sell.

that should get you started

You can get plenty for well under 40k. I bought my 16 XLT 4wd Screw 5.0 with 301a for 37k OTD 2 months ago.
