Need to make a decision
Stopped at the dealer today to see what they would give me for my 2014 FX4 5.0L. It has 40,000 miles and they offered 30k which I thought was reasonable. I planned to build a Lariat SC 5.0 502A as I really want the LEDs. Even after A-plan and 2k in incentives it's like 47,700...more than I want to pay. So they say how about a XLT...I never gave that a thought but drove a 5.0 sport with 302A. Sticker was 48,840. After A-plan and rebates down to 38,771. Then the guy says he will have their custom shop put leather in...no cost. Ugh. Obviously the interior of the lariat is nicer. Really like the leather dash in the lariat vs plastic in XLT. But crap I can upgrade for 8,771. XLT has tow and 3.31 with elocker. Not even sure why I'm writing this...I know it's my decision. But, if anyone wants to comment please do as I'm not sure what to do. Just wish ford would discount the lariat more...or offer LED as an option for all models.
I have a '13, not a '15+, but if you do any towing/hauling or want larger tires, I would strongly recommend avoiding the 3.31 rear end. You want 3.55+, because even though it seems minimal, the lower ratio makes a real life difference, especially on the highway. JMO of course.
Is your 14 a Lariat? Cause my 15' XLT 302A the dealers only want to give me around 32 and it has 2000 miles on it. Saw a 16' Lariat I'm interested in for 47000 but I'm not dropping 15000 to move up one year. Basically I'm interested in the same truck, but a Lariat with the 502a package with the moon roof and a 3.55. Everything else is the same.
My 14 isn't a lariat but the FX4 package back then was basically a lariat...leather, heat and cooled seat, sony, HID headlights, trailer break, 3.55 elocker, power fold mirrors, etc. The resale will be much better if I get a lariat 502A obviously...but man ford sticks it to a guy who wants a few extras. Good strategy I guess.
Surprisingly all of the 3.31 rears I've driven in the 16 model seem more responsive than my 14 3.55. All have the 5.0. My assumption was the lighter body.
Thanks for the input everyone. Love this forum.

Personally, being that my truck is my dd, I would have fully regretted not getting the Lariat over the XLT. The upgraded interior (as you mentioned), leather, additional sound proofing and keyless ignition/unlock/lock in addition to the other upgrades make a huge difference for me in overall satisfaction.
I wanted to get the 502a but it's not available w/ the 2.7. I upgraded to LED bulbs after the fact and the only thing I wish I had was the heated steering wheel from that package.
At the end of the day, however, a guy has to live within his means and I definitely agree that $8k is hard to justify. Ultimately, you have to decide if it's worth the cost ($1,600/yr if you keep it for 5 years) and determine how much of an impact it would have on your satisfaction every time you go and drive your truck. Good luck with whichever way you go.

My suggestion is to find the expected private party selling price for your truck.
In any direction you look, you'll be dropping coin to get out of the '14 into a new '16 that's shortly about to be 1 model year old.
Have you thought about adding aftermarket led lights to your truck and not trading it out for a '16?

As you say, it's your decision. But a truck with 40,000 miles is barely used. And as far as the value - no one can comment on that more than you. Using available online tools you can value it as equipped and in the condition that it is and learn if $30,000 is reasonable.
From my perspective, which only matters to me, I'm constantly amazed at what motivates people to buy a new vehicle and what models they pick. I think LEDs make vehicles look cheap, I expect to see them on a kid's vehicle with train horns and other things like that - but to each their own. I also couldn't give a whit about leather. Never had it in a vehicle, never would pay for it (or Navigation). But I also said years ago I would never buy a minivan (and did) and would never pay more than $30k for a vehicle (and did, but only by a hair).
Do what you want to do - but do your research first.
