Default Mounting and balancing

Where are you guys going to get new tire mounted and balanced? I have the sport 20 inch wheels and putting on BFG KO2 285/65r20. Can any place handle this size tire or do I need a truck shop? I am worried about them getting scratched while changing out the tire. Would you use a Pep boys? Or big chain? I figure they would be more likely to make things right if they mess up the wheels.

Have you tried asking your dealership to price match?

Might be too far for you, but I use ETD Discount Tire in Clifton NJ. I make the drive since they haven't damaged any of my wheels but more importantly, they correctly road force balance the tires.

The dealership by me has a QuickLane and will beat any advertised price for tires.

Do what I do, and stand next to them while they work on your vehicle. You can't expect what you don't inspect.

Any shop with modern equipment can handle them, low pro tires like 30 series require more special equipment.

Whether they get scratched or not will depend on the person using said equipment unfortunately... Take a video and pics beforehand and tell the guy at the desk that these are new wheels and you expect them to be scratch free afterwards.

Years ago Pep boys marked up some of my wheels when the monkey tire changer pried the wheel weights off of my aluminum rims with a friggen screwdriver that he hammered under the weight first, what a cluster that was.

They would not replace the wheels they messed up, they wanted to send them out to be "refurbished" and would not provide me with a replacement vehicle to drive while this process was done or provide me with wheels to use while they had mine.. I have never done tire business there since that experience.

Most places will not let you do this.

This. There was a thread a little while ago by someone who had their wheels damaged like this. Not sure what came of it but since he had no proof they were not scratched beforehand, and he left the tire place without inspecting them, those are two strikes against a sound claim if there is damage.

If you have a record of their condition beforehand, and inspect them immediately after they're done, preferably with somebody representing the shop then you ought to be fine. Before you let them start you could ask for their policy on any damage to your vehicle/wheels/etc.

Then most places won't get my business

I do understand the insurance liability thing tho.

At Discount Tire, you can stand right next to your vehicle, granted, it's outside the pull down door, but you can still see exactly what's going on. And one should always check their vehicle before leaving.

That size doesn't require any special equipment. Any normal tire shop or dealership can do them.

Don't go to PepBoys! A good friend of mine is a regional director for them and he refuses to take his own vehicles there. He uses Discount.
