Motorcraft oil filters
That refers to the base filter, which is basic, and fine for short oil changes, but not much else. Again, context of the date matters due to how it's all changed, when people started hearing about filters, what stories they've heard and what they want to believe.
FL500S at Walmart for me. Never bought anything else for my truck. I buy the Mopar cartridge filters from a Dodge dealer on ebay because they are quite a bit cheaper than anywhere else. AC Delco filter for my Vette when Walmart has it; Wix or Purolator synthetic from the parts store if not.
I've heard the Fram rumors over the years. Are they good or bad filters, hell I don't know. I've been driving a Ford for the past 30 years and just always bought Motorcraft filters. Are there better filters out there, I'm sure there is. Are there worse filters to use, I'm sure there are. Motorcraft is a solid product so I just never worried about it and kept using what worked.
OTOH go cutting used oil filters open if you want to impress me. If the filter is not collapsing or tearing then all the claims about "quality" is just F.U.D. Oh, and many of those videos the presenter doesn't seem to understand which way oil flows through the filter. Oil enters around the outside, comes out the center.
My bone with Fram is how long they continued their time release Teflon/PTFE oil filters. Pure Slick-50 copycat snake oil. Proof marketing was designing product, not engineering.
I like the return to cartridge filters. Bare filter we can see going in and see coming out.
The FL820s is somewhat interchangeable to the FL500S IF room allows.
Ford Racing doesnt make a FL500S version but refers you to their racing version 820 filter CM-6731-FL820.
Seen it in discussion on 1 of the mustang500 forums if anyone wants to research it for themselves.
Ive seen it noted on the web the FL820S had changed twice in the past couple decades.
The 1st change was the can reduced in size but still had motorcraft ink printed on the can & noted "Made in the USA".
The 2nd time (2020-2021) the can looked the same but they now come with a motorcraft sticker label & it notes "Majority content made in the USA".
Ive noticed filters labeled as motorcraft on amazon & they tend to have noted in the extra info "made in china".
Ive seen many posts amongst the web referring to filter media ripping in motorcraft (820 & 500) filters amongst other brands.
I decided to cut open the motorcraft fl820s oil filter that I had on my f150 (from back when I started getting valvetrain noise at 90k miles using motorcraft 5w20) & found the media ripped in the same location as others have noted). I had a old FL810 filter laying around & decided to cut it open, ripped in the same area. I didnt realize there was a such a issue with the motorcrafts ripping & I felt I was the last to know about it.
Oh hail the mighty motorcraft filter

And I don’t think you ever will.
The hysteria over Fram oil filters is misplaced about construction methods and materials. My point is the filter media is fiber so what is the problem with fiber “cardboard” end plates on the media? Cut used filters open. If not torn then what is the problem?
