Default More Sync 3 Issues

Bought the 5 year subscription to Ford's map updates for my 2018 F150 Lariat. Last month I downloaded and installed the latest maps NA 2.23 after upgrading to Sync 3 Version 3.0 Build 23219. Update via USB 3 drive took forever - almost 3 hours! Finally said it was completed and the system shows it's running the latest version. But about 2 or 3 times a week a message pops up saying the installation is in progress and not to remove the usb drive or turn off the engine. I click to close the message and don't see it again for a few days. Called Ford yesterday who had me do a soft reset and a master reset, both of which I hade already done at least times! The tech now says they cannot help me anymore and I must take the truck to the dealer to sort it out. Not sure what that will entail or how much it will cost me. Anyone had this issue? Any suggestions on fixing it would be much appreciated!

Yes that was a long update. Mine took over 2.5 hours. Did you get the *persistent* completion screen and instruction to remove the USB drive at the end of your map installation? Did you remove the thumb drive? Do you have another thumb drive plugged in? When you use navigation, does it give voice directions?

The "installation in progress" screen continuing to pop up smells like an interrupted installation, with the system continuing to try to install the missing piece. That could happen if the USB drive was removed too early, or left plugged in after the installation was complete and the vehicle restarted. The dealer is probably going to start by reinstalling the map update, and charge for the 2+ hours it takes to do that, so I'd try that before resorting to the dealer.

Thanks for the response Taggart! Yes I finally got a completed screen with instructions to remove the USB drive and restart the engine. I did so and all seemed well. I verified that the maps version was NA 2.23. But the very next time I started the truck I got the message saying installation was in progress. I reinserted the USB drive to try again and it appeared to be working but I soon got a message saying it could not complete. There is no USB drive in the system at present and it does appear to function properly including the voice directions. So I guess what I have is a "nuisance" issue, having to close out the persistent "installation in progress" message.

Ford will not allow me to download the update again and start all over with a new install. Instead they want to send me a pre-loaded and formatted USB drive for $40 plus shipping. That would be probably cheaper than the labor charged by the dealer, but I have no guarantee it would work doing that.

Do I have anything to gain by disconnecting the battery for a few hours? Or am I asking for trouble? Thanks again!

BTW, one thing I forgot to mention was that I first attempted the install after verifying my Sync 3 version was 3.0 and it failed. Called Ford CRC who advised me to update the version 3 I had to Version 3, Build 23219. This may have been the genesis of the problems!

I know you've paid for the update and probably want Ford to figure out what happened. And by going the route Ford Support recommended, it will cost you. As an alternative you might check out Cyan Labs (cyanlabs.com). They have a very good and reliable process to update your SYNC version as well as the maps. And it is free unless you decide to contribute to them. It is an alternative to the approach you've been taking. Just be sure to read and follow their directions - especially pertaining to the 2018 SYNC updates. Many of us (including myself) have used Cyan Labs to update SYNC3 and the maps. Hope you get it solved soon. Good luck!

Many thanks for the suggestion. I will try Cyan Labs before throwing any more money at the problem. Two hours plus of labor at Ford will not be cheap for sure!

There's the problem. It's normal for the screen to show a message about installation in progress the next time you start the vehicle, because it is finishing the update, just like the completion message told you it would. I think you corrupted your map by reinserting the USB drive and letting it start uploading again, but not letting it finish. Once you insert a USB drive, you have to leave it there and keep the engine running until the upload is finished, without interruption. I would bet reinstalling the map will solve your problem. You shouldn't need to download it from Ford again or buy their USB drive. Just insert your USB drive again and wait until you get the persistent completion message. Then remove the drive and ***don't ever insert it again.***

Thanks but I no longer have that drive formatted for the truck. I used it to repeat the process for my wife's Lincoln to update her Sync 3 maps!

Did you download onto your computer and save it? I don't save mine anymore because of limited storage space but I do keep more than one usb stick so that I have a dedicated one for my f150 and one for my wife's explorer. You may be able to find in your downloads history on your computer also. The licenses will have downloaded with the same name however, make sure you use the license downloaded for your f150 as they are different for each vehicle.

No. Same situation with disk space. Cleaned out download folder a couple weeks ago!
