I just gave the go ahead to start building the truck I wanted today. It is an XLT loaded and setup for towing, the MSRP is 45k and if I can trust the invoice on NADA then it should be 41k.
So far the dealer has only come down $1,000 off the MSRP. After you add the delivery charge and the dealership paperwork fee ($520!) we are right back up to 45k+ before rebates. I asked the salesman what her invoice was and she acted like she didn't want to tell me, so I went home and found out myself what it should be for a truck with the same exact setup.
From what I understand in this thread, I should be getting closer to invoice price before delivery processing and rebates. Is this correct? So instead of 44k I should be paying 41k?
I signed some papers and gave a $500 deposit, which is enough to give the go ahead to build the order, have I lost all my negotiating leverage?
We didn't actually process a loan since the vehicle isn't even built and I haven't received delivery. Is it too late to go to the other nearby dealership to see if they can get closer to invoice?
Sorry if this feels like a hijack, but it does seem pertinent to this thread.

Are there other dealers in your area? Surely within ~150 miles. You should be able to send the list of exactly what you want to the closest dealers and see how they play. If you have to drive a few hours each way to pick up your new truck who cares? Even so, you could still try that, and come back to your current dealer with some much more competitive offers. Then they might have more incentive to deal. Some dealers just think buyers are clueless.
You should basically be paying invoice within a few hundred bucks. From what I see around here that's around 9-10% off MSRP. Start a little lower than that and see what they go for. i.e. if your truck is $45,000 even, try $40,000 or $40,500. They might laugh at that but then move on. You know that others have been getting those prices. I understand market varies geographically and all that, but you should be able to find a dealer that will get you the price you're looking for.
IMO, don't get too bent out of shape about squeezing them for that last couple hundred bucks. If you find a dealer that offers you close to invoice, I'd say just go for it. I have better things to do than spend days arguing over a few hundred dollars on a $45,000+ vehicle!

"Price may require Trade-in 1995 model or newer and Finance with Ford Motor Credit."
So they're probably going to try and stick it to you on a trade.
