Idea for weight in the bed
I know most folks put bags of sand or even concrete in the bed for extra weight in snowy conditions. Just wanted to offer up another option.....I had boxes of 12x12 linoleum tiles in my garage. I would guess each box weighs 50-60 lbs. They boxes are compact (12x12x5) and stack neatly in the bed (I have a divider). They also stack neatly in the garage when not in use. I should add that I have a tonneau cover so the cardboard boxes stay pretty dry....wouldn't work well in an open bed.
I paid about $6 each for these boxes in the clearance section of Home Depot.
Works well for me......might not be a solution for everyone.

Old motorcycle tire. Cut a circle of plywood just slightly larger than the opening and place it on the ground. Put the tire over it so the bead is on the plywood. A couple layers of saran wrap inside. Fill with concrete and add an eye bolt, chain, or rebar loop as a pickup point. You can use a lift, or roll them up a ramp. Don't slide and weigh plenty.
Anything you put in the bed could potentially become projectiles in an accident, even sand bags. But that would only be worst-case scenario if your truck flips. Anything else and they'll just slide into the sides/front of the bed or the tailgate.

Holy crap I shot coffee out my nose!!! Good thing they aren't leaning on a Toyota tailgate, or they would break it.
I have battery cases from UPS units. Very compact and heavy. I also have a tailgate extender so the cases can fit back there between the extender and tailgate to prevent them from flying around.
