Default Help understanding the Tailgate Lock

Hi folks,

This has been a great information resource for understanding some of the features of my, new to me, 2015 Platinum F150, thanks for that so far for sure. I especially loved the tips and tricks sticky, some great stuff in there for sure!

I was able to get enough information from searching this forum to establish that the tailgate lock seems to be working but I am hoping for some clarification/suggestions.

I had a canopy put on the truck yesterday that is supposed to lock with the keyfob when the tailgate locks. Well, we couldn't get the tailgate to lock at all so I scheduled a service call with Ford. Then I came home and got on this forum and note that folks talk about not being able to lock the tailgate with the fob if you are standing nearby with the fob in your pocket!

I tested this this morning. If I am away from the truck and I lock it then the tail gate locks. If I am nearby the truck and lock it, either with the keypad, the black button on the door handle, or the keyfob, the tailgate doesn't lock! This seems pretty counterintuitive and inconvenient.

I am in the habit of locking the truck with the lock button on the handle but now that I know that this won't lock the tailgate.

Is this normal? If so, how do you folks lock your truck to ensure that the tailgate is locked? Do you simply start to walk away and hope that you are far enough away for the tailgate to lock?

Am I missing something here or is my truck not working properly? Looking for someone with a bit more experience with this to help.

Thanks.

Don't know about your platy but my 15 xlt locks or unlocks with the door locks. I have the system set for single push to unlock all doors this setting is accessed on the settings menu. Have you tried pushing the button on the fob twice?

There is a sensor in the tailgate that knows if the fob is near.. Just like on the doors..

So, in short, if you open the door, hit the lock button on the inside panel, get out of the truck, close the door, THEN walk past the tailgate, it unlocks? Or, only if you're very close to it?

If you lock the locks the tailgate locks as well regardless of where you are standing.

IF you are standing close enough the tailgate will open when pushing the exterior button on the tailgate if you have the fob in your (hand) pocket.

The tailgate never unlocks unless you manually unlock it or open it with the fob or are within close (3-4') proximity with the fob and physically push the open button.

If you are sitting in the truck and lock the doors regardless of where the fob is the tailgate will remain locked. (unless someone with the fob is standing by the tailgate)

So this does seem to be the case. I wish it were explained in the manual but I goofed around with it with the help of my wife this afternoon.

If I walk away from the unlocked truck and then lock it while away the tailgate locks. It also stayed locked, or would not operate with the button, when I simply walked away, and then when I approached it, I could open it without touching the Fob in any way.

Thanks for the help and confirmation on this.

-pushes lock on fob.

-tells himself it's locked. it has to be, right?

-walks away, but can't stop wondering if it actually locked.

-finally goes back to check. touches handle and it unlocks. da**it!

The only way to check if the lock is working properly is to leave fob somewhere at least 15' away, then go physically check the handle.

You can even sit in the truck, set the fob on the center console, lock the truck, get out and try and open the tailgate. It won't open. Put the fob in your pocket and do this and it will....

Yes, this is what was totally goofing us up yesterday. The only time we could get the tailgate to "lock" was when we were in the truck and locked the doors.

Now though, it all makes sense and works as expected. Just have to get the canopy operating properly now. Back to the installer for that one.

What models is this feature on? My XLT doesn't, I think.
