No other way to describe it. Driving tonight. Clear conditions. 25 degrees. No rain/snow/precipitation since Thursday in the am.
all of a sudden I hear a thud and what appeared to be a cloud of dust or smoke shoot out of the left front corner of my truck (2015 F-150 SCrew, 3.5 eco). I thought my left front tire blew…or that’s kind of what the “impact” felt/sounded like.
I pulled down the next side street and got out and looked. My entire headlight housing was blown up. I got back in the truck and turned around to see wtf happened. I called the PD just in case. When they showed up and took a look even they were baffled. No collision damage. Not a mark on the grille, hood, fender, bumper or lower dust shield (or valance or whatever it’s called).
It’s obvious something caused pressure build up and caused it to explode. From where it happened, the debris field was approx 50’-60’ long.
ironically all of the light bulbs were intact and working. Im completely lost on this one
As noted above, the 2 PO’s who showed up said they’ve never seen something like this.
anyone have any ideas????
I had unplugged what was left of the housing when I took the pics

Inside of left headlight housing
Hopefully we can see more pix tmrw, but I've never heard of such a thing... Anyway it could have been a rock or debris?
I had a rock hit my windshield in my Jetta 100years ago and it lodged itself into the glass. Did not fully pass through but stuck half in, half out....
Rock strike. Be glad it hit the headlamp instead of something more expensive to fix, or the windshield. I had a truck throw up a rock that hit the windshield on my previous truck right in front of my face at about 80 mph. It didn't come through but it left a spiderweb of broken glass the size of a softball right in front of my face. I suppose it would have shattered a plastic lamp housing.
I have a friend who headlight housing was destroyed by a bird hitting it at highway speed. You'd probably have some blood and feathers left behind if that happened.

Have you checked on the price of your KR led headlights yet?
Yeah, debris for sure. There is simply nothing in the light that can "blow up". Make sure there isn't someone laying in the ditch dead back where the 'impact' took place.
How far below freezing was it, Plastic gets quite brittle when really cold a slight impact and shatter. 50-60 ft debris field was because you were rolling and spreading out the crumbles.

Who calls police for a bird strike?
Maybe he thought it was a gunshot. That crossed my mind when I read the OP.
