Front USB port problems
I have a 2017 XLT 302a that I'm having problems with the front two USB ports. When I connect my phone (Galaxy S7) It acts as if there is no USB connection. Also I tried plugging in a USB stick with some songs (MP3) it doesn't get recognized and won't play the songs. When I plug the phone in it doesn't indicate that it's charging again just like the ports are dead. It will not switch to android auto or bring up any apps from the phone either . It does pair with bluetooth and plays songs from the phone that way. Everything else works fine. It all worked fine a week ago when I last drove the truck. Fast forward to yesterday. I pulled the radio bezel and top cover (the one with the center speaker in it) off to add a cell phone holder to it and run a USB cable up to it from the front ports. I was extremely careful and to my knowledge I didn't do anything that would have caused this. Famous last words! I did remove the 8 inch screen and CD player to make things easier but made sure all plugs were reconnected firmly. So if anyone could give me some ideas as to what might have happened that I missed or have a pdf of the USB/radio wiring diagram they could share with me I would really appreciate it. I'm starting to really wish I hadn't decided to do this! I really don't want to tear everything all apart again but if I have to I would really like some ideas as to what to look for. I know some of you guys have practically redone your whole truck so this probably seems like small stuff to you! Hopefully one of you can help me out!
Things that I have tried:
1. Tried 3 different USB cables all new. No difference.
2. Did a master reset on sync. No difference.
3. Checked all settings on the phone and in Sync to make sure they were right 60 bazillion times. They were. No difference.
4. Deleted and added the phone back into Sync 5 bazillion times. No luck.
5. Plugged the phone into one of the ports in the back seat area and it indicates that it's charging from there at least. No indication of charging from front ports.

Yup, sounds like the power and data connectors aren't seated completely. Either that, or your USB port is bad but you'll find out once you pull the plug out. Get a good set of trim tools. Very easy to get out from the right side of the plug. Once you're in there, if the plug is bad, it's very inexpensive to replace.
Is there a way to test the ports? I didn't touch them or any connections to them though. Thanks to all of you for taking the time to help and old fella out! People like you make this forum a great place!
Used real good cables. Two of them had worked with it before I played with it.
I agree I was figuring that was what I would be doing but I feel better knowing you guy's figure that to. Just didn't want to miss doing something easy to fix it! Looks like a tomorrow project.
Thanks, I do have a set of trim tools and they really help when working with this snap together stuff! Are you talking about the plugs on the backside of the radio controls? I did have those off but I thought I got them back on good. Maybe not!

Thanks again! This is very helpful. Do the USB ports come out easily?

On the subject of re-seating cables consider using a blob of Shoe GOO on the gap between the outside of the connector and the radio chassis or panel to keep it put.
The nice thing about polyurethane adhesive is that you can cleanly peel it off later (with effort) if you ever need to.

Before pulling everything apart to check I had my son connect his new Motorolla phone to my truck and we had the same result with his phone as I had with mine. No charge. No Android Auto.
So I figured it had to be the truck. Here is what I found with the USB ports. Took everything back apart and checked all the connections, checked for bent pins or anything else that looked out of place. I didn't find anything at all that was loose bent or that I thought would have caused the problem! So I put it back together (very carefully making sure everything was perfect) far enough to test. Tried my phone and when I plugged it in it indicated that it was charging! I'm sure the neighbors could hear me cheering!
Well I got happy a little to soon! When I installed Android Auto it still wouldn't switch over to the truck's screen. After I finished crying
and put down the axe that I was going to chop it up with I wiped my eyes and tried to figure out what I was going to do next. I called my son again and had him bring his phone back out for another test. His worked perfectly with everything! No big hurry to cheer this time though! Next we tried my phone (Galaxy S7 Edge). It would charge but that was it. So time to buy a new phone. Thought about that for a while and decided to reload complete phone operating system and try it again first. Reloaded the phone and plugged it back into the USB port and the good Lord smiled on me and everything worked! Tried it a few more times just to be sure and its working fine now.
So what the HE double hockey sticks was the problem you ask? I wish I had something positive to tell you after reading this far
but here's what I figure happened. I think I had two problems. First there must have been a loose connection or something that wasn't right when I added the extra cable and ran it the first time and when I reconnected the cables this time truck part of the problem was fixed. The next part of the problem was with my phone. I checked every setting I could think of and nothing helped. When I reloaded the phone it fixed the other problem. So two days later and bald spots in my head where I pulled my hair out it works again!
<<<<<cheering now
To everyone that offered help and gave suggestions, thanks! I very much appreciate the support.

BTW wife’s last words to me after she knew it was working: "The difference between you and me is that I try to fix what isn't working and you try to fix what is already working!" She doesn't understand retirement at all!
