Default Extra key

I bought a used 17 F-150 last week and it only came with one key, the sales guy said he would get me a key for cost. I bought it out of town. Does the dealer have to cut/program new keys?

I have to have the second key to get the keyless entry code. Plus my wife would like one. 🤔

A good locksmith can do it, and it's a good idea to have 3 keys. If you lose one, you can use the other 2 to program the replacement yourself. But if you only have 2 & lose 1... Read the owner's manual.

Most dealers use a mobile service to program new keys.
Beware though, it sounds like the sales schmeiser told you he'd get you a key at HIS cost(which generally equates to 10% off), NOT 'cost'
I hope I'm wrong for your sake, but this is the common way to deal with a customer who asks for something at 'cost'.
You're gonna have to pay for the smart key itself, then to have it programmed-what they use the mobile service for
Be prepared to pay $200-$300

In my view they should have supplied the truck with two keys, it was originally sold with two keys and it should have two keys now. I don't think you will be able to buy your own key and program it, as you need two working keys to program it yourself, and I don't think any locksmith will be able to program a new key either. If you can, insist that they supply a second key at no cost to you.

A bunch of misinformation here.

Yes, you cannot buy a key and program it yourself with only one key. However, FORScan does allow for the programming of keys, check to see if a 2017 is among the years that allow that. Many buy the key, cut it at a local key shop / HD / Lowes, and then program it themselves with FORScan.

Any locksmith with the right software can cut and program an original key. Make sure they aren't simply cloning the key you have. A dealer can do the same thing. They will likely charge more than a locksmith.

You need at least two master keys to program additional keys and get the code for the keypad. A good locksmith can cut a new key/fob and will have software to program it as a master, in addition to the one key you have. That will also remove any other programmed keys/fobs not in your possession.

Forscan could program master keys for older Fords but I'm not sure about newer, I would check the forscan website and forum. I did it on my old Ranger - 2002.

And of course a dealer can do it, $$$ amount depends on the dealer. My local dealer wanted $300+ to purchase, cut and program a 3rd key/fob. Locksmith across the street was around $120, for key/fob, cutting and I programmed it with the two originals.

Yes the dealership has to program a new key fab and it’s expensive too because when I bought my truck last year it only came with one key fab. I went to a dealership about how much it would cost to get another one programmed and everything- 400 something dollars for everything.

Valet key?
What the hell is that? Something new to me.
Is that in addition to the two key fobs i got when i bought my truck?
If this mystery valet key exists, where would it be hiding in my '16 XLT?
Or is this something new added for later year trucks?
