Default Extra key

I have looked in the manual as well as searching this forum but can't find any info. What use does the spare key that was with my owners manual serve? I have the keyless entry/remote start/push button start fobs. I have this little key that also came with the truck. I'm not talking about the key blades in the fobs.

Thanks

Default Extra key

That key is for locking the glove box and console. It can also be used to unlock the plug in the rear bumper for lowering the spare tire.

The small key within the key fob will also work for all of these functions it's just not easy to remove if you used it all the time.

I also have the small hard keys that come in the keyfob and another extra key the dealer calls a velvet key, but I beg to differ the big hard key with the plastic end works in the glove box but will not work in the spare tire or the drivers door. I asked them about it and they said it's not supposed to work for the spare tire lock and door, but I am at the point that I don't really believe anything the dealer tells me about these new trucks because they don't know. I caught them in a few lies already.

Here is a pic. I have three smart keyfobs, three small hard keys and that one larger hard key that I may just throw in the trash it's worthless.

My key with the plastic like in your picture works on my console and spare tire lock. I just tried it.

Yes it does. Your dealer doesn't know what they are talking about. The only thing to keep in mind is the door lock cylinder is for backup entry only. For example if the battery in the truck is dead. Using this key or the backup key from inside the fob will set off the alarm otherwise.

It can't be used as a Valet key since it has no way to start the truck and will set off the alarm if used to open the door.

Any of those three keys should fit all of the locks on your truck, except the box link cleats. Box link has it's own separate key. A spare key with the plastic grip is $18 . I bought a spare. A friend of mine in parts told me the machine that laser cuts those keys is $40K.

Yep you are correct. They do have the laser cutter because when I bought the spare smartkey and an extra tiny hard key. I got them to cut the new blank key for free and it's works great...

Don't know why when they gave me this key with the plastic on it does not work properly? They had to order it and cut it because the truck did not come with one. All part of the story of the dealer lost keyfob... That's in another thread I started.

Thanks for all the info.

If I can't trust the dealer on a 48K truck don't know if I really want the truck. Sad very Sad
