Default Ecoboost question

After 60 yrs on Harleys I've decided to hang it up. I've been driving different Fords since the mid '60s. My question is this. I have concerns about the twin turbo system and the reliability. I'm leaning towards the 5.0 simply because it is a simple system and to a point I understand basically how it works, My wife drives to the store, post office, ect which are 1 mile there and 1 mile back. My concern is what negative affect can that type of driving have on the turbo system? Any info on this is greatly appreciated. Thank You in advance. Also we live in Fl.

I am an ECOBOOST fan
The turbocharged ecoboost engines have water cooled bearing housings
I have owned 6 ecoboost vehicles
All were tuned for improved power & fuel mileage
Never any durability issues with any of them

I am on number 4 and my cousin owns my last truck and neither had issues. I did own a 2011 5.0 and it was my problem truck.

First, there is nothing “simple” about Ford’s 5.0L. It is loaded with technology and advancements despite not having turbos. Most engines these days are, it’s how we are squeezing such big numbers in performance and economy out of small displacement.

To answer you question, all available engines have the same expected durability. You’ll need to drive them to decide which is for you. I am in the 2.7EB and I am absolutely happy with my decision. (My gut says I’d like the 3.5EB and 5.0 just as much but for different reasons.)

Hopefully my answer is sufficient while at the same time not starting another engine debate.

I really like my 3.5L EB. 20,000 miles so far and no problems.

Find a base motor truck and take it for a test drive. The 3.3 has no pesky turbos and two fewer cylinders than the 5.0. I registers 290 HP and 265 lb/ft torque. It incorporates the dual EFI with direct and port injection which, while complicating things, provides the best of both worlds for EFI. It uses the tried and true 6 speed automatic which I find to have very good ratios with my 2.7 EB and 3.55 axle. Folks report the best MPGs with those engines as well.

You are in Florida with no hills to climb or altitude to deal with. You stand a chance of being perpetually happy with the 3.3 for what you want.

Good luck and happy hunting!

You don't want an eco boost engine. Gas mileage will be crappy because you are always in boost between lights. We had one on the farm and traded it for the 5.0 because it never got warm always in boost and crappy mileage. The 5.0 does better in this use model. If you where on the highway more then city it would be eco all the way. I have a 16 Platinum with the 3.5 eco I drive 35 miles to work each day I am home. It is one he-- of an engine for this. When I am around the farm the 17 XLT does one he-- of a job.

Whatever you end up with, you'll have to take the long way home at least once a week. That super short distance is brutal on the engine, oil, and battery. You can always charge the battery, but all the condensation (water) inside the engine and exhaust rusts things out. And the oil's additive package is quickly depleted with only short trips like that, so you need to change the oil sooner than normal, to avoid acids to form. As far as which engine, seems like ALL Ford engines are having issues at the moment, so pick your poison. The V8, with worse cam phaser issues than the EBs, and heavy oil consumption in some cases, seems worse. I ended up with a 3.5EB due to the maxtow package, but I'm not that impressed with it, to be honest. For your use, your best bet seems to be either the 2.7EB or 3.3 NA V6. It's going to cost you less, and be more economical to maintain and operate. Best of luck in your decision.

Like others said none of these engines are simple these days,
I agree with the 3.3 litre v6 being a great choice for you, and the 6 speed trans is flawless( it was actually designed by Z.F. ).

I have a 2018 with the 5.0 and 10 speed combo, it sounds awesome with the Borla exhaust I put on,
and power is great........but, it also burns oil and makes a number of unsettling noises and the 10 speed shifts like crap at low speed/ light throttle driving.
Honestly I would be afraid to keep this thing outside of warranty( I didn't plan to when I bought it, anyway).

If you want a 5.0 you might be better off buying a 2017 or prior model year,
far fewer of the pre 2018 owners report burning oil and the 6 speed is a much smoother transmission.( not sure if you were thinking new or used anyway )

And again, I think the little non turbo V6 would be a great choice for you, if you don't mind not having the sound of a V8.

That kind of driving is bad for any engine.
