Default Differential problems

Hello, so I have an issue with my differential making a grinding noise and the dealership told me my bearings needed to be replaced. Previous to this I had an engine issue that caused my entire engine needing to be replaced. After sitting in the dealership compound for over 9 months waiting for an engine replacement they finally put an engine in it ( covered under warranty ). After a couple to few months after I started hearing a grinding noise and they proceeded to tell me the bad news. When asked if sitting for so long without moving could be the cause they told me that it was impossible to get moisture into the differential because it was a sealed unit. After asking a couple local mechanic shops they’ve told me otherwise and I’m stuck in the middle on who to believe. Any suggestions?

Reason I asked is the front differential is noisy on my 2018 in very cold temps. But we changed the oil and it tested clean. I have heard of few rear differential problems on these trucks.

My 2018 had water in the rear diff. I assumed it was in some deep water before purchase. I caught it before damage. Water can enter through the vent.

Rear axle has a vent line. Not only can moisture make it's way into the axle housing, but submerging the truck (and top of the vent line) can most certainly allow water to enter. Anyone who tells you an axle is a seal unit is a liar.

Just replaced my rear diff cover with a PPE aftermarket cover w/drain plug yesterday. Gear oil was in great shape (still even had somewhat of a honey color to it, but was definitely used). My vent tube was still attached up high, and I never take my truck through deep water.

That bad boy had DEFINITELY ingested some H20, that's for sure.

I installed an aftermarket cover with both drain and fill plugs. Will make future oil changes easy peasy.
