Funny how the 5.0 is actually more expensive when setup this way.
Yeah trying to decode the various payload and towing packages can be a bit mindboggling. In the lower trim level trucks, the best way to order the various payload and towing packages are prerolled into a trim level like the STX package.

BTW, the F150 base engine is the 3.3L Ti-VCT V6. The 2.7EB is second from the top motor and really is the best motor for most suburban toy haulers.

Not on the Lariat, and my results are specific to only the Lariat trim.

Yup, the Lariat is an upper-mid trim level. I don't know, Ford offers what Ford offers at any given year model and trim level. You can't get a 2.7 in the Platinum. I actually wish it was offered because I probably would have gone that route and added the towing stuff. The Max tow is nice but honestly, I don't tow anything over 8k lbs.

I know what my setup will be and know what payload I can get away with, at least with my current trailer, which I plan to keep for several more years, and when it comes time to upgrade, it will be SuperDuty territory. As long as the truck has the tow package, 36 gallon tank and ITBC, and 1500 pounds payload, I can tow my trailers. I know the reasoning behind *some* option availability, but then there are others that make zero sense, like tech package only on the 4x4.

Look at Canadian models. We seem to have more freedom with option mixing here. For example, you can`t get my truck config south of the border because I have the payload package. For some reason, adding the payload package will remove every option I have when configured on Ford USA. And when you try to add it again, even 302A, it removes the payload package...

I equipped my truck on ford.com and then tried to add payload package last. As you can see it removes everything I added:

You can however, add this in Canada, like mine is.

My 15 3.5EB averaged about 2.5MPG worse than my buddy's 2.7EB, or apples to apples, 2017 - 2017 my mileage average is about 3.5MPG worse than his. He frequently sees close to 20MPG and I hover around 16.5MPG on average.
I have a 2017 XL Super Crew 4x4 STX with the 3.5L Eco Boost 10 speed Automatic and Max Tow Package and my Average over 6,500 miles is 18.6 mpg and I live in Northeast Ohio where it's cold from November until well yesterday when it was still only 32 degrees!!!

Except Ford increases the price charged for two other engine choices.

And as far as packages are concerned, you can't get the 2.7L with HDPP. There are only two engine options to max out on payload and the 2.7L isn't one of them, the two higher priced engines are.

So I'd say that Ford has the 2.7L listed as third from the top.

Well it functionally has a different purpose in the lineup. It's not the top dog in any category currently but it has a lot of power and good fuel economy. It is fully targeted at the suburban grocery getter that spends the weekend hauling a boat to the lake. The 3.5 is I'm traveling the country with a large travel trailer attached but I don't quite need a Superduty. The 5.0, I'm a fossil trying to relive the glory days of the V8 ;-)
