I did not see any posts about this, but I got a notice from Ford yesterday extending the tailgate switch and wiring until Apr 3, 2030 (or 150,000mi). I guess Ford is doing this lieu of a recall notice? Has anyone else received this notice? I guess this would explain why I found my tailgate ajar the other day when I was heading to Homedepot. I thought I might have hit the tailgate release (maybe). I guess after covid-19 my truck is going to the shop!
I just got the notice in the mail today, but I'm going to hold off on it. I've had the tailgate pop open once in 4 yrs and I think I did that accidentally with the fob. I have an UnderCover bed cover on my truck and it fits over the top of the bed and prevents the tailgate from opening if it should pop open. Now I need to get the tailgate ajar warning light working so I know if it happens again.

What the hell is the splicing for? No way I'm going to do that; don't see the point. At least until I know exactly the reason they're doing it, and rethink it. There's hardly any water getting in there, but what I'd do is maybe protect the wiring getting into those connectors better. And the tailgate switch, I might change it myself (does anybody have the part number? And how much?), and with the proper tool (plastic pry tool), or at least with the tip of the screwdriver protected, to avoid scratching everything. Geez. That switch change should solve the self-opening issue IMO. The wiring thing might be a separate issue, no? But if the new switch doesn't work without the splicing, I wouldn't touch it. What I'll do is pop the switch, and wrap the wiring with electrical tape very well, to prevent water from getting into the switch, and call it a day.
I also only had 1 incident (in almost 2 years) that I had the tailgate open on a trip (flagged by a motorist on the highway). I thought I closed it, but who knows; it wasn't raining, so maybe I forgot. Oops. Fortunately, nothing fell off (tonneau cover), and it was the last time.
Finally, is there a way to know if my 2018 truck still has the 'tailgate ajar' connector inside the tailgate, without physically checking? I have the BedRug cover on the tailgate, and it's a PITA to remove and replace. If splicing those wires is important (really doubt it), and the tailgate one is there, might do it. Otherwise I wouldn't. Oh, forgot to mention I haul my motorcycle every once in a while, meaning if I do that the 'tailgate ajar' notice would be active during the trip. Does it go away, or it stays in your face all the time, blocking the digital speedometer? If that was the case, then might not do it. But if you can just 'OK' it, and it goes away, then I wouldn't mind at all. Thanks.
