Current SYNC 3 and CarPlay/Android Auto Information
For anyone that might be interested in a timeline accounting of my successful install last night I post the following:
My Truck: 2016 Ford F-150 XLT SCAB with 8" Sync 3 ver 1.0 (NoNav) Purchased Oct 2016 and was on the lot since June.
The USB hub appeared to be the correct one already installed with blue backlighting, so I tried it.
- Started Vehicle & the wireless was active and connected to house the network from the driveway
- Inserted an OLD Lexar USB2 4GB FlashDrive in the left USB port with the folders established as instructed.
- Started Stopwatch feature on my phone
- The Sync Display immediately showed "Updating System Software"
- @ 3m: The access indicator light on the USB stopped flashing indicating no additional access.
- @ 12m: No activity on USB since it stopped blinking.
- @ 15m: The Display indicated "Installation Complete -- You may now remove your usb device. Updates will take effect the next time you start your vehicle. (CLOSE)"
---
- Extracting the 2nd part claims to take 4m 50s to transfer to the USB flash stick. - It did within 30s.
- System updated showed on screen after short delay from starting up the truck
- Stopwatch started
- @ 25s: USB inserted and shows activity on light - Screen says updating System Software
- @ 1m 25s: Activity light on the USB stopped flashing.
- @ 5m 30s: Installation Complete shows on the screen
- Pulled usb
- Shutdown vehicle
- Opened door and pulled keys out - screens shutdown - Closed door
- Started timer for 5m.
- @ 5m 30s: Restarted Truck.
- After 10 sec delay the Sync Screen appeared and displayed "Update Complete" as before.
After update the About Sync Showed:

The color of the lights don't specify the latest USB module as the newest version is available with either blue or white lighting with 2 different part numbers.
You only need the latest module for use with Apple CarPlay. The older module works with Android only which is why it worked for you. Plug in an iPhone and see what happens.
Just to clarify...

Anyone have any suggestions? I've eagerly awaited this update. I was about to use the unofficial update shared on this thread when Ford made the update available on the Sync website.
First attempt appeared to be working. I removed USB as directed and after restarting truck nothing happened. After a while it told me there was an issue with one of my files.
I downloaded again on a different PC, reformatted USB drive and tried again. Same thing. At one point there was a message about space?
I tried a master reset thinking I could start all over. After doing so when I insert the USB it immediately gives the message shown in the picture.
Any suggestions? Or is it time to go to dealer.

Why did you not use the current version?
