Current SYNC 3 and CarPlay/Android Auto Information
My opinion on the release is not so much for dummy testing (I don't think they really want thousands out there with bricked systems.) I, personally think it's more about the hubs. They don't need to pitch Carplay right now until the hub availability improves and then they can offer "upgrades" to folks where they can collect some $$$. (again, just thinking outloud)
Except carplay is worthless. The sync 3 system stands heads and shoulders over it. It just doesn't integrate into the sync 3 system very well, limits too many things and the maps suck.
To be clear: this is not a Sync 3 problem, it's all carplay.
Can't speak to AA, don't have Android.
Navigation box covers half the screen, will not take voice to define destinations, no interface when moving, etc. Only thing Apple maps may have going for it is it will be updated/revised more often than Sync 3. But right now, it sucks and IMHO is far behind the Sync 3 system.
Carplay also seems like an orphan as far as Apple software/apps are concerned. I'm willing to be it will just die off in the long term. just not enough market share in it and it's not a segment they can dominate/monopolize like their other products. It's just not apple's business model. Hell, they want to limit you to buying only their usb cables by chipping them, Why would they want car manufacturers to get free navigation and music for their cars off them?
My sync will let me change and cancel routes while driving (via voice command only), the map is full screen, I can read and send text via voice while moving, etc. None of this was possible when carplay was hooked up. It doesn't even allow you the option of using the Sync 3 nav if you prefer.
Sync 3 lets me use voice commands for the Sync itself and with a longer press, lets me access siri on the iphone, which allows my to control all my music via siri (which I prefer). Having carplay hooked up also seems to change the voice commands Sync 3 will accept. For example, I can't say "Radio 104.3" and get FM, only sat radio. I have to disable carplay to get access to both sat radio and AM/FM though voice commands. Carplay also wouldn't recognize some of my steering wheel button control inputs.
I tend to do everything while moving by voice command if I can. anything that limits that is not worth the trouble for me. It actually makes things more dangerous if it doesn't work as expected as, like most people, I look down to try and figure out why the hell it's not working like I expected.
We have the same problem when flying. The automation does something no one expected (and it can be a trivial thing) and suddenly everyone head is down in the cockpit and no one is looking out to actually fly the aircraft. Technology is great, except when it does something you didn't expect and then it becomes a hazard.
Carplay just interferes with the Sync 3 operation too much for my liking. I want the secondary systems in my truck to work the same way each and every time so I can focus on driving, not having it distract me when the damned radio didn't do what I expected it to do because some third party application changes it every time I plug in their hardware.
I tried to use it for two days, but finally resigned myself to disabling carplay. Once I had, all my problems/frustrations disappeared.
In case you can't tell; I use apple, but only because it's one of the most supported (oem and aftermarket) systems out there. I'm certainly not one of the apple faithful....

Is there any way to turn off text message notifications in Android Auto? Ive turned them off in the phone but they still pop up in AA which is getting very annoying.

Apple vs Google, I fear, is a battle with no winners as they're just on parallel roads and too proud to get too close. (Appliance vs Open Source)

I'm right there with ya'! I use it because it's the overwhelming popular vote. I have a critical list for Apple about a mile long that I'm sure they couldn't care less about if I stood on top of the Statue of Liberty and yelled it out on national television.

I'm with y'all on Apple. I use it because it just friggin works and is well supported. I was an Android-only guy forever but i just couldn't take it anymore. All the hoops I had to run through to squeeze battery life out of just the OS alone, much less apps draining. And if you didn't have a flagship device you could forget about updates and support. Eventually I gave in an got an iPhone and have been pretty darn happy since. Not once have I punched my phone screen out of anger. Just once in a while have to hard boot it.
Android started going in the right direction with Marshmallow and Doze, but my Nexus 6P was crappy in many other ways. I hear they finally resolved a bunch of stuff with Android N, maybe ill give the Pixel a shot next year when version 2 comes out.
