I assume you have some bitterness towards alternative marketing methods?
You have to think back to 1972 when AMSOIL became the world's 1st API certified synthetic oil. a new type of product was a challenge to market.
So they had to think outside of the box.
The company could have converted to traditional marketing methods but that would mean turning their back on the very people that made the company.

Im sorry that you seem to think AMSOIL is a pyramid marketing scheme
But Believe it or not "pyramid marketing scheme" are illegal. So by now some form of law enforcement should have knocked on the offices up in Superior Wisconsin and shut the company down.

I am Wondering why you feel the need to Bash my product.
Had you been involved in an MLM one time in your life and it went sour?
Or you just like harassing the vendors of this fine forum.

FordTechMakuloco ? Is that you ? I have yet to meet a REAL Ford tech who doesn't run either synthetic blend or full synthetic Motorcraft in their vehicles ... given low purchase costs for them...

Amsoil is overpriced snake oil - compared to comparable full synthetics

I am sorry that happened to your Family members.
There were a lot of Bad MLM companies in the 80s and into the 90s
Some companies were more about the "opportunity" than the products themselves
and there was a hefty buy-in fee and the recruiting rep would get a big portion of that "buy in fee" and it became a perpetual cycle and when the products didn't sell bad things happened.
AMSOIL is different it's a $30 buy in for dealers I get $10 of that. not too risky and shouldn't put anyone in the poor house not to mention zero purchase requirements. Now if you have used AMSOIL products in the past and they have let you down that is a topic fit for an internet debate, not you don't like AMSOIL because it's sold like Avon.
