I feel the same about taking up the console space. I use min continuously and I feel it would be a pain to have to deal with the hinged lid on the safe every time I needed change.
Thats the beauty of mine, the lid opens 80% before touching the sliding change tray, plenty of space to slide my gun and holster in without any ahssle at all. So when I open and close it, the lid for the safe box never touches the tray. I also leave a hat and gloves on the safe and they just fall to the hinged side, out of the way.

I use a 3 dial locking box that is anchored with 4 bolts through the bottom of the center console. It would have to be smashed to get it open as there is no way to gain access with leverage. But then again, I don't leave the truck without it. Add the locking lid of the console and I would say its pretty secure.
How difficult was it to bolt to the bottom of the console box? Did you have to remove the entire console? I'm looking to do exactly what you did here, would love to understand your process.
