Default Brake Controller Installation

Wife has a 2016 expedition that includes the trailer tow package, which has the brake controller. Can I take out that brake controller and install it in my 2016 F150, which does not have the brake controller?

Keep in mind, even if the part numbers for the TBCM (Trailer Brake Control Module) are the same between both vehicles, the F150 will need to have the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) enabled for the TBCM to function. This will need to be done by the dealer using IDS or Forescan software will also enable this feature.

If the dealer enables the IPC for you, make sure they follow the 2016 procedure - not the 2015 procedure as it has been revised for the 2016 vehicles that have Pro Trailer Backup Assist - See SSM 45574. Many dealers don't take the time to read this SSM and when the vehicle leaves the TBCM doesn't work.

For your convenience I have included a copy of those revised instructions which include SSM 45574

When installed and programmed, you can test it by pushing the gain buttons and you will see the gain numbers on the cluster and sliding the brake lever will give you a message "trailer not attached". If nothing happens then it was not programmed properly.

If using Forscan, in the IPC; (Copied from the infamous Livnitup)

Ignore whatever you have where the x's are below and only change the non-x value in the position indicated. When FORScan gives message about incorrect checksum just continue with the write (it'll automatically write the correct checksum anyways)

720-04-01 xx4x xxxx xxxx Trailer Brake Controller Gain Setting enabled
720-07-01 xxxx xExx xxxx Trailer Brake Control Module enabled

More than one 2016 F150 has left the dealer that the TBCM didn't work because the tech didn't enable the IPC correctly per the revised procedure nor did they take the time to make sure the TBCM was even functioning.

Like so many posts on the forum have mentioned, look at the stuff yourself. They don't care about your stuff. That is why I mentioned the very easy test. done in less than 10 seconds.
