Default Blacking out the Platinum

In the process of dramatically reducing the amount of chrome on my 2015 Screw Platinum. Yes, I could have bought a limited or some other version that had less or no chrome, but this is what my dealer had when I traded in my 7 year old Expedition for a comparably optioned F150. I've had it for a year and a half and love the truck--just a little too much chrome. My inspiration is the pic of the 2017 Raptor below. I noticed that in this picture the fender flares, grill and other items appeared darker than the Raptor I saw at my dealer last week. I think the actual paint color of the flares, grill and tailgate applique are actually Magnetic in a matte finish. I'm going to use Ford's Carbon Black YZ9A paint code for the "color" prior to finishing with a two stage urethane matte finish to try to get closer to the color in the pic below.

So I'm starting with the door handles, mirror caps, and tailgate applique. Then moving on to the front grill and part of the bumper that is exposed. I plan on leaving the four chrome strips in the grill as they are and the fender side and tailgate F150 badges chrome. Will document here and answer questions anyone has as I go.

Removed the door handles, mirror caps and tailgate banner. Door handles=easy, mirror caps=less easy, tailgate banner=way less easy.
Scuffed all with 80 grit sand paper, sanding blocks, red scuff pads.
washed all with soap and water, dried all, wiped down with acetone, primed two coats. I hot glued the door handles to strips of wood so I could work with them without touching them and put pegs in the other end that slide into holes in a board so they can dry.
See below...

Amen brother. Never been a fan of chrome. Looking at buying a new Platinum (like the options it comes with) and blacking out all the chrome. Especially the front bumper and rear tailgate trim. Can't wait to see how yours comes out. Very nice work so far.

Looks great!

Two questions for you:

1- what was the process for removing the door handles?

2- what are you planning to do with chrome on the doors just below the window?

Good luck on the project!

I'll be doing the same, except taking mine all Magnetic.

Have you considered decals or inserts for the Platinum letters on the tailgate? Chrome letters might be just the right amount of chrome... seeing as you're leaving the bars on the grille.

I've seen the chrome (brushed aluminum?) lettering on the blacked out applique and it looks down right sweet.

correct, matte Magnetic
only chrome on the Raptor > horn pad Ford oval
blacked out interior > pretty sweet

Looks awesome! Can't wait to see it on the truck!

I'm going to be painting my door handles as well. How did you remove them? I tried real quick on my rear passenger door and couldn't get it off.
