I've looked at the factory extender. Looks like you can what I'd call an "OEM style" extender from Amazon cheaper. Reviews are pretty good, with many saying it looked identical to OEM. However, common complaint is that it came with no directions. How difficult is the install over the bedliner?
Yeah, I have the HD Max. Plenty of room for the bikes, whereas the factory Ford unit didn't extend out far enough. When I bought my AMP extender last year, I couldn't get the no drill brackets anywhere. Everything was backordered with no ETA. I just used the normal drilled ones and its been fine.
If you look at a picture of the AMP HD unit vs the Ford unit, you can see how the AMP one comes almost straight back along the gate, then curves. The Ford unit doesn't come out straight near that far. Too bad, as I really liked the versatility of the Ford unit. For myself though, the AMP does what I need it to do while hauling motorcycles.

As you can see in my earlier picture the answer is "not very," if I can do it. As long as you can drive a self tapping screw/bolt, it works fine. IIRC, you have to drill the holes for the securing bolts on each side and the accompanying holes for the locking plungers (for lack of a better word), top and bottom. I used the pre-drilled holes in the bed as a guide. Be careful with the drilling as you will end up being pretty close to the metal of the bed. You don't want to gouge the bed as you come through the bedliner. I drilled the plunger holes a bit larger than necessary so they would engage with ease versus trying to get them caliper accurate and dealing with expansion/shrinkage issues year round. Hope this helps.
OEM works with drop in bedliner, FWIW. Again, as stated above, it really matters how you are going to use the area. I use mine primarily as a bed divider, but when picking up bagged fertilizer, mulch, and similar landscaping needs, this comes in very handy as an extender and I like how it folds into place along the bed walls when not in use. I transplanted this from my 2012 to my 2013 to my 2018. No idea what other solutions cost. It should be noted that these OEM units are not inexpensive. Hope this helps.
Did you install the bushing/insert into the bedliner once a hole was drilled in it, or behind the bedliner directly into the aluminum bed holes?
I just checked it to be sure and as far as the locking plunger engagement is concerned, I didn't use anything in between the back of the bedliner and the face of the holes in the bed. The plungers simply go through the bedliner into the holes in the bed. Also, I didn't use any guide/bushing at all for those holes I bore in the bedliner and nothing in the holes already made in the bed of the truck for those plungers. No issues since installing it four years ago. I hope I'm addressing your question accurately.

I know it's not pretty to look at and seldom seen from the outside but I have been using a home built out of 12X4 lumber for the last 18 years to set Gas Cans in for transport when using power equipment.
Two spaced just wide enough with two spacers to accept 5 gallon gas cans, keyed to the drop-in Liner Indents at the rear of the Box.
Removable anytime.
A....lot cheaper and not for eye candy.
