Default Backup Camera

2017 3.5 EB XLT

Not sure if I am being a whiner because the truck is awesome, but the backup camera is really hard to see in the dark, looked awesome during the day, actually better than my 2013 Cadillac.

It's almost like I need more light back there?

It's bad. New, brighter lights or a night camera.

You can retrofit the tailgate handle that has the OEM LED light.

did a quick search on backup lights and they look to cost around ~$300 (at least on the first link I clicked on) so that sucks, maybe ebay has some knockoffs for cheap?

Can you replace the camera with a better camera? Is there an aftermarket for cameras to fit OEM spaces? Why would you have a backup camera that's doesn't have night vision lol.

Guess I'm off for more searching.

I got this truck last minute and I know very little about it other than it is fast....

Sorry for the dumb questions....

What's sad is I have the light, it's too wimpy. I need some power back there, maybe I'm getting old.

Mine works fine and I can see great at night. Now the Accord I traded in was terrible and the backup camera was useless at night.

I changed my reverse lights to LED and that helped some. I created 2 small brackets and mounted sealed LED trailer license plates to the underside of my bumper. That helped me see the ground and curbs. The bumper blocks the reverse lights from illuminating the ground close to the truck. My best fix was the realization that the factory angled license plate lights actually shine up into the camera and wash out the picture. Mine is XLT but I noticed the platinum stainless full tailgate cover sticks out enough to block the light from hitting the camera. As a temporary experiment I used some black tape to cover the top half of my license plate lights. Works pretty good. Not sure how to permanatly stop the glare though. I believe the pre 15's rear bumper had vertical walls on either side of the plate area. On 15's and later they are angled. They need a different lens/light fixture. IMHO

I don't have an answer Sir. I do know that my 2011 Ford Edge had a great camera for night visibility. Something must have changed.

They are pricey but I use rigid srq reverse lights. Mounted under the frame, toggle in cab to keep off/on/on with reverse lights. Power is fed from trailer hitch wires and no codes are thrown. Light is awesome!

I think something like that is needed, maybe I'll see if I can find a knock off as a first test...
