Default Auto System Updates

I have a 2019 XLT and just had my screen freeze black displaying “check surroundings for safety”. I shut the truck off for about 15 minutes and everything worked again. My software version is 3.3 build 18266. Is this something to be concerned about? Also, should I leave the auto updates on or off? After reading some posts there really wasn’t a definitive answer on that. I’ve owned the truck since new and had it in a few weeks ago because of update issues and the dealer said software was messed up.

I've had 5 vehicles with Sync 3 since early 2016. None have ever updated automatically over Wifi. I've always had to update via USB. I say leave it off.

I think Sync just sucks. Admittedly, I have Sync 2. The other day, I was trying to use nav to go to an adress in Jamison Pa. Nav kept coming up with Jenkintown Pa. These two towns are well over 100 years old.

My truck connects to my home WiFI every time I pull in the driveway but I've never seen it say it was downloading an update. Just so you know, it won't update maps over WiFi, because the file is too large to download in a reasonable timeframe. You can download map updates for free online at https://syncnavigation.com/ford/home and it will take at least a half hour on a fast connection. You'd think if you have the mobile hotspot activated, it would use that to connect and download updates, but as far as I can tell it doesn't.

if Sync freezes, just do a reset. I have to do this everyday in my truck. Been in twice to get fixed, now need to go in again.

Are these issues because of the Sync 3 software in general or is it due to the system connecting to WiFi, trying to auto update and not completing the task correctly?

In my experience I think this could be said of any OEM nav program. They are outdated when installed, outdated when updated and cost too much to keep up with. A Garmin type device or Google maps is just so much better.
