Default Ambient Lighting?

Lost of vehicles have those really small lights that are under the rear view mirror or dome light and shine just enough light to please the eye when searching for something at night. Is there anything we can add to get this in our trucks? Mine is a 15. I've seen the lights for the cup holder but seems like, to me at least, it would be too much and i just want something minimal.

We agree. My German cars had subtle overhead lights, and they were handy and non-distracting.

In my 2016, I tapped into the circuit that powers the overhead console switch backlighting, and installed two ice blue LEDs for this exact reason.

I have not performed this mod in my new truck just yet.

I just bought a lighted LED push-button switch to install in my overhead console. I selected a red light, but they have every color. It’s bright enough that it should work perfectly for this.

This way I can turn it off if I want.

I bought a silver one at first, then bought a black one. That is just the part you see. The LED is still red, though they have every color LED choice.
I hooked it to 12V first, which is very bright when you hit the button...then I hooked it to 6V and it seemed perfect. So, it's dimmable based on voltage.
A small potentiometer would make it dimmable.

My idea is that the lit button will be slightly recessed when it is turned on, so it shouldn't bother me by being in my line of sight.

Pics of another installation, very similar to the installation I did to my prior 2016.

Default Overhead Console Ambient Spot Lighting Added

Thanks @Cuch

I actually had this exact same thought after driving a VW that had these little overhead lights. They are perfect because they are red and have a focused beam pattern so they don't produce any glare and they aren't distracting. You really don't notice them until you hold something directly beneath.
