I'm still saying it's application and not product. The emblems I paint are painted chrome, and i constantly get compliments on how well they hold up to rock chips. See pic. Granted I'm using PPG. But the substrate is chrome. A substrate that is not meant to be painted.

Whenever I paint one of these trucks I always inspect them for chips because of this forum. My last job, which was a Ford dealer, closed the body shop. So we paint like 4-5 2015+ trucks a month now because they aren't available anymore.

Here is a 2016 I did the other day. Bumper was tied in a knot due to the accident. So I didn't see how many chips that had. I took a pic of the mileage, a wide shot of the truck. Then the only 2 chips I could find.

It could have been the Ruby Red paint too. I was following behind someone after the road was salted and the idiot kept driving over the line and sprayed the salt up into the air and of course pelted the truck. When I got to work that day the entire hood was damaged. I counted at least 100 chips before quitting. Some had cracks in them like a windshield bullseye. It was crap paint, did not hold up at all, yet my topper had some marks on it, but no chips.

Supposed to be warmer tomorrow so I may give the truck a once over and inspect the paint, but I don't expect to find much, it is holding up like I would expect it to.

I had a black 2016, and it chipped and scratched so easy. I had never owned a vehicle that chipped so much. And I never drove that truck on any thing but paved roads. It really disappointed me. I got it detailed and they used a clay bar treatment, that cleaned up all the scratches, but the chips were permanent. Then I got a 2018 again in black and it seems better. I hope so.

I also live in Colorado and drive all over the state. My 2018 Oxford White has numerous rock chips on the front White bumper and the hood, even some on top of the hood close to the windshield. I was thinking it is excessive, much more than my 2014 Explorer that i also drove all over the sate and has 140k miles.

My '04 Heritage has 248K miles and I've driven it as far east as Connecticut, as far west as Colorado and as far north as Minnesota. Several trips to each place. It doesn't have near the amount of chips on the hood as some of the folks have on this thread, nor are the chips that is does have as large as some of the ones in photos here. It has an aluminum hood too.

I have a 2016 F150 with Lithium Gray paint and have noticed some pretty significant chips in my paint where a mustard color primer is now showing. I previously owned a 2012 F150 in white and never noticed significant chips like these.

I live in Colorado in a rather harsh climate, but my truck is just now 12 months old and my previous truck, with a steel body, I had for 3.5 years and never saw chips like these.
I’m having the same problem huge chips just appearing everywhere the paint is pathetically ****ty, my friend is having the same problem I can only imagine what my truck is gonna look like after a couple more trips down the logging road, fingers crossed for a recall.

My 2014 was sterling grey and seemed bullet proof when I traded it in. Only issue I had was an eyelit from a tarp that was free to bounce during a cross country trip and it ripped through everything, but it was my fault. My 2018 lead foot has me a little concerned, its chipping on the steel bumper but something about it seems a lot more fragile.

A claybar wouldn't remove scratches. There is nothing in the claybar abrasive enough, nor enough cutting power during a hand clay, to do that. All it does is remove contaminates embedded within the paint that a normal wash with a mitt won't remove. Perhaps the detailer polished your truck to remove the scratches.

I have a 2015 Guard Metallic, has a few chips on the nose of the hood and the painted areas in the front fascia, but nothing I consider extreme. It has more chips then my 2015 Explorer with the Platinum White, but not much, especially considering the truck as seen more highway miles then the Explorer (higher speed impacts). I have like 3 or 4 chips on the EX and about 5 or 6 on the F-150. The guard metallic seems to be holding up relatively well. I just got some touch up paint for it and am going to get a clear bra for it as well and make sure I keep it waxed. My dad never waxed the truck because of his health, so that might have effected it as well.

So far, my 19' Oxford White with the whole 500 miles I've put on it looks fine. Already been washed three times and its getting its first waxing this weekend lol. My cousin who has an 18' Tuxedo Black Is taking his in for some paint work. Has a chip under the lip of the tailgate and near the drivers handle I believe.
