Default Aluminum Body - Paint Durability

Has anyone noticed that the paint on their aluminum body truck is less durable than the paint on the steel body trucks?

I have a 2016 F150 with Lithium Gray paint and have noticed some pretty significant chips in my paint where a mustard color primer is now showing. I previously owned a 2012 F150 in white and never noticed significant chips like these.

I live in Colorado in a rather harsh climate, but my truck is just now 12 months old and my previous truck, with a steel body, I had for 3.5 years and never saw chips like these.

I almost posted this a while back. My wife mentioned my paint chipping and at first I was defensive. But Ive noticed recently she was right. I too have a 2016 lithium gray truck. My large chip is on the front hood. Surface scratches are easily apparent as well. Not sure if the flat color
Plays a factor into that. Curious to see if anyone else has this issue.

No problems with rock chips here. If you're traveling gravel roads or areas with a lot of debris; recommend a good touch-up and then do a ClearBra or 3M strip along the front fascia and hood.

Thanks for chiming in @xxxcoldxxx, I thought I was just being picky at first. There are quite a few surface scratches on mine as well.

@16sport: yeah, I agree the clear paint protection bra would help a bit. However, you notice the first photo I posted is just above the front, passenger door handle. So this chip couldn't of been prevented from the bra nor is it caused from another car in the parking lot (door handle protects that area from large objects, not to mention it is an F150, most car doors don't reach that high!)

I have a couple similar chips on the sides of the vehicle on the doors. Seems a bit...fragile.

If the truck is less than a year old isn't there some sort of paint warranty?

Nevermind, that might have been something my dealer tried to sell me.

Same thing here. Had my '12 f-150 for 3.5 years traveling same roads and had my '15 just a little over a year and it looks 10 times worse. Most of my chips aren't on the front but on the sides. This whole truck needs 3M protection. I don't travel gravel roads or back roads so these are courtesy of those who do who I get to drive behind occasionally. I see lots of other f-150's in the parking garage at my work and the '15's and up all look the same. Kind of a bummer on such a nice truck otherwise.

Thanks @Txnoledbd...this is disconcerting to hear. I just emailed my dealer who has been outstanding over the years. Lets see what they have to say.

I will admit to driving in a harsh environment for sure...but this is an F150 and it is just now a year old.

It will be interesting to see if some colors are more prone to this than others. My Ruby Red Tinted Clearcoat seems to be holding up well.

Wow. Quite a few large chips! Someone else said they thought the Lithium Grey color seemed to scratch easy. Getting the clear bra on the front end was one of the best additions I made to my truck.
