I have noticed more than usual rock chips in the paint on my 2016 Ford F150 compared to many prior Ford Mustangs and 2004 Ford F150 that I have owned

When you have a new vehicle every little chip, nick and scratch on your new truck gets your attention. And your previous vehicles didn't have anywhere near as many, at least as you remember. I went back and looked at a photo of my '07 shortly after I got it. When I enlarged the image and checked out the hood, there were at least 8 paint chips on the front of the hood at 3 months. My '16 doesn't have one after 2 years.

Memory is funny, you tend to forget and overlook previous minor flaws in past vehicles and go nuts over the same flaws on you new, expensive purchase. While I'm not saying some members who complain about "more chipping" in this generation of trucks, I highly skeptical they are any worse than previous years and other models.

My 04 grand cherokee has one chip in the hood thats been there since i bought it in 08, other then that its clean and has been abused much more than the truck. Paint on it sure seems a whole lot more durable than either of our newer vehicles.

My '04 F-150 Heritage has 6 small chips on the aluminum hood.

I bought it new and it now has 236K+ miles on it.

Driven it to Connecticut, to Colorado, to Minnesota and everywhere between.

I have had it off road many times and through a lot of snowy winters over the 14 years I've owned it. Its been pelted with rock salt from plow trucks several times.

Default 16 Ruby Red paint chips

My '16 has several tiny chips in several different locations on the truck. All 4 doors have chips both sides of the bed have chips(tiny). Every body shop i have been to says Ford's process for painting these trucks has a flaw in it somewhere, they get lots of folks bringing there AL F150's in to be looked at/repaired. My issue is not the chips on the front of the truck but the chips in the side panels, which are so small you wouldnt think whatever hit it(if that small)would have chipped it. Did a walk around of mine and my dad's '05 F150 (100000 plus miles) and my 2 yr old truck is in worse shape with the chips, especially on the side body panels. I love the truck, the paint is just too brittle.

Default Paint chipping on sides & other issues

Hood

I have a 2018 magnetic metallic F150. It has been dirty for a few months so I finnaly washed it after a flock of birds dropped their loads on it. Poop wasn’t even on there 24 hrs. Once I washed it noticed quite a few chips in the paint. All but one are on the doors which is strange. I do not drive in harsh conditions by any means. The truck isn’t even a year old. I always park in back of lparking lots away from other cars. I would think there would be a dent if it were from a car door? Very disappointed in the truck for other reasons as well. Transmission clunks, motor makes scratchy sound and it sounds like it backfires constantly. It clunks when I start it 1/3 of time. Sounds like the driveshaft to me. Power steeering doesn’t always work. Mainly when turning suddenly at slow speeds and directly after engine fires back up from auto start/stop. Transmission slips when accelerating up incline from a dead stop and when shifted from drive to reverse. The sync 3 system doesn’t come on when truck is turned on sometimes as well. Ford dealer had it for 2 weeks but ended up saying everything was normal and they could not recreate any of the issues. For a truck with a sticker price of $55,000 I was expecting good quality and reliability. I am a first time ford owner and wish I would have never bought it. Anyone else have any other the issues listed?

The water based paint used today is more brittle than the solvent based before it, match that with the flexibility of the Aluminum and I have found it chips more readily. Rock salt has never chipped paint before on any of my vehicles, but it wreaked havoc on the 2016 I had. The entire drivers side got blasted. Worse than that, the clear decided to start removing itself from the base in some areas that got chipped. I am not looking forward to the warm weather when I can clean and inspect the paint on my 18. I already know there are a couple scuffs I need to buff out, and I hate to think how many chips it may have that I will need to repair.

Not sure how a latex based material is "more brittle" than solvent. Film build is where factories fail. Film build is the key to paint durability. In these 3 pics that is waterbased paint I have wrapped around my finger. If it were solvent it would've shattered like glass.

What changed your mind from this post?

Ford across all their factories has used water since I started in auto body 20 years ago. Prices increase, so they put less and less paint on. Especially clear, to save $$. Case in point the delam era in the 90s. All domestics had incredible paint peeling issues. It was all due to poor application of the product. Not the product

Just an observance on the 2016 paint being more brittle than previous years and compared to the paint I have been using on the toppers. Judgement is still out on the 2018 to see if it is more durable than the crap Ford used on the 2016. That paint would chip just looking at it.
