Phasers are common and versatile Phased array Pulsed energy projectile weapons, first seen in the original Star Trek series and later seen or referenced in almost all subsequent films and television spin-offs. Phasers come in a wide range of sizes, ranging from small arms to starship-mounted weaponry
Or a cam phaser:
Ford’s cam phasers are specially designed, computer-controlled cam gears for all 2005 and newer Ford Modular 3 Valve engines that have the ability to adjust camshaft position while the engine is running. Since the modular engine uses two camshafts, two cam phasers are used.

hahaha... nice Star Trek reference, there. Hee!
Basically, cam phasers rotate camshafts to change their timing relative to the crankshaft, aiding idle emissions, then torque and horsepower. Variable Camshaft Timing.

I thought Ford fixed this problem when they moved to the 5.0 engine from the 5.4 back in 2011?

On a warm startup, the engine would run rough for a few seconds, then smooth out. After that it was fine. Only happened when the engine was already warmed up. Never had a problem 1st thing in the morning.
I found my original post about it from a year ago:
