Default 4x4 needed?

So I am in the market to get a truck. I would prefer to get a 4x4 even though I currently live in El Paso and am more than likely moving to ABQ next spring. I don't do any off roading where I know I would need it. My thought process is though I'd rather have it and never use it vs not have it and need it. One buddy said he was in Minot, ND with a 4x2 and never needed 4x4. I feel like though if I was sent there or a few other places it would be a good thing to have, especially in the off chance my wife would be driving my truck in the snow (she grew up in Miami, has very little snow driving experience). So do I really need it or should I save a few bucks and get 2 wheel drive?

Depends on your truck usage. I always say 4WD is like insurance, you might never use it but when you need it you are sure glad you have it, happened to my Father who my Mother talked him out of 4WD, he was glad I put a set of chains in his truck since he got stuck in snow without them.
For me I need 4WD year round, I use it pulling my boat out of the water on a wet slippery ramp and for the occasional snow we get along with the rare time I do go offroad.

Nope not needed there or short trips in snow on the flat.

Now highway driving across hilly areas or through deeper snow or icy conditions, yes - needed. People who say otherwise have never been in these conditions without 4x4. Now the way around it is to just not drive. Sometimes where i am i have no choice but with 4x4 and years of using it, have no issues driving hundreds of miles in 4x4 while others in 2wd spin into the ditch....

Depends on your needs. I have a 4x2 and mine is just a pavement princess. I prefer not to worry about transfer case issues and other things that come along with a 4x4. PLus 4x2 is lighter and don't need to worry about CV joints with my level etc.

If you go or live in places that you will utilize a 4x4, definitely get one.

I had the same debate with myself when I was buying mine this month. I decided I would rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. Most of the time I used the 4x4 on my last truck it was due to acting a fool so I was hesitant to get it on the new truck. It just really depends on what you plan to do with the truck, conditions where you're going, and if you can afford it or not.

I grew up in Illinois, and if I was living there I would def want it again. But living down in the Southwest it seems a bit of an overkill. But, like jd50i said, its a bit of an insurance and nice to have in the back pocket.

I live in Mass and we get our fair share of snow....my last 3 trucks were 2x4s and I just put weight in the back to get around during winter but when it was snowing out I wished I had 4WD,and I'd often missed work due to the weather....my new truck is 4WD and the only time I'll be using 4WD is when it snows...its good to have when you need it...I know you prolly won't see snow where your living but if the budget allows I'd go 4WD and like others have said....think RESALE VALUE

I guess I would rather have it and not need it, then need it and not have it.

I hunt and live in MN so 2wd isn't an option for me.

Actually can't even find a 2wd unless It's a fleet truck pretty much

I wanted a 4x2, as well. Used 4x4 on my 12, 1x and didnt need it.

Tried finding a 4x2 near me, was a no go unless I flew to FL, or TX. F that.
