Great thread!...After my last typo involving grease I'm just going to sit this one out.

I'm interested in a solution. Not sure I'm crazy about a valve unless is has some type of lock.

What does the dealership use?
do they use a large open top container, or what do they do so it doesn’t make a mess?

To start, I opened the oil cap under the hood briefly to ensure there wasn’t pressure in the system. Then loosened my oil plug past the retaining clip so I could get my oil pan ready. I held my oil pan up to the plug and removed it the final turn by hand. The oil comes out fast but not and faster than other cars I’ve done. You definitely need an open oil pan not one of the no spill pans.
Uhhh...there’s no pressure in the oiling system if the thing isn’t running.

Not sure what they will come up with, but the Fumoto Valve I had on my 6.0 had an accessory for a little plastic locking clip. It felt pretty darn secure even without the clip. The orientation of the valve and placement of it in relation to the rest of the truck components, would have made it extremely difficult to ever accidentally hit on anything. None the less I always kept the plastic clip on it.

I put myself on the notify list for when they come out with a solution for our trucks, hopefully it is as good as the rest of the stuff they have.

Thanks Mike. You know, I felt the same way about those fancy drain plugs with valves. Seems too easy for something bad to happen. But, given the huge PITA these 18's are, I'm willing to give it a shot. Good reviews on their products, so I feel pretty confident in it.

I've had Fumoto valves on a couple of vehicles. It's a pretty simple device. If you want to be extra cautious, you can secure it with a zip tie around the valve below the lever. That'll prevent it from moving altogether, and you'll need to snip it off every time you drain your oil. But I've never found the need to do that.

I tried to learn from my first oil change and picked up a 1.5'' flexible hose to put up against drain once the plug is removed. It was an improvement from my first oil change, but I still got oil all over from the 2 seconds it took me to get the plug (and my hand) out of the way and the hose in place.

For those with 2018's who change your own oil, has anyone come up with a good way w/o making a mess? I've got a couple other ideas brewing, but I figured I'd reach out to you folks. I've been changing my own oil since high school, but I'm about to break and start having my dealer do it.

Just bought my '18 King Ranch F 150. Seeing the posts here, I decided to investigate. I purchased a Ronin drain assembly. Fumoto will not work thanks to plastic oil pan. I consulted with Ronin Engineers, they have confirmed this will work. See the video on-line.

I have 500 miles on my 5.0 V8 and will be changing this weekend. Looks to me like I'll have only one mess. This Ronin looks like a real problem solver.

The guy has the same problems I've had changing mine. It's Mustang but the challenges are the same. FYI the language is NSFW.

This wizards problem is he has a single hole in the drain pan and he didnt open the vent/exit cap. This is reason #312 why its best to use a drain pain that has two holes in the pan and the vent/drain cap. His other problem is he is clumsy af. I drop two + gallons in 4 seconds when I drain the oil in my car and dont spill a drop b/c a) the right drain pan, and b) not clumsy af. This guy needs to watch some videos rather than make them imo.
