Default 2018 5.0 Oil Change Hacks?

Second oil change is in the books for my 2018 5.0, but I'm about fed up with the excessive mess that's being made all over my garage courtesy of Ford's ignorant drain plug location. I tried to learn from my first oil change and picked up a 1.5'' flexible hose to put up against drain once the plug is removed. It was an improvement from my first oil change, but I still got oil all over from the 2 seconds it took me to get the plug (and my hand) out of the way and the hose in place.

For those with 2018's who change your own oil, has anyone come up with a good way w/o making a mess? I've got a couple other ideas brewing, but I figured I'd reach out to you folks. I've been changing my own oil since high school, but I'm about to break and start having my dealer do it.

Does the Fumoto valve work on the 18 models?

Fumoto valve only works for non-plastic drain plugs.

I pull the drain plug out enough to get the oil to flow, but don't pull it all the way out because of the mess. It sucks because you have to hold the plug for a minute or two until the flow starts to slow down.

I did both my 18’s a few weeks ago and didn’t spill a drop when draining the oil. I read stories about it coming out so fast that is the wheel and brakes on the passenger side.

To start, I opened the oil cap under the hood briefly to ensure there wasn’t pressure in the system. Then loosened my oil plug past the retaining clip so I could get my oil pan ready. I held my oil pan up to the plug and removed it the final turn by hand. The oil comes out fast but not and faster than other cars I’ve done. You definitely need an open oil pan not one of the no spill pans.

is the '18 different from the '15? I dont recall having oil splash issues when I do mine. My car OTOH drops 2 gallons of oil in 4 seconds out of the oil tank, thats always a pucker moment changing the oil.

Aluminum foil is your friend.

I have a 2016 5.0L with a Fumoto valve. No mess from the oil drain. But I use foil under and around the filter as I remove it to avoid spilling oil all over the skid plate.

I don't know what challenges you're facing with the plastic pan and the drain plug, but I've used that technique on lots of vehicles.

No drain problem from the pan. The oil filter has oil that drains two directions via OEM trays. Doesn't bother me. It provides an opportunity to wipe down components with an oily rag.
