I like my 2.7. I have the power and fun of a v8 when I need and the capability of good fuel economy if I want it. its the best of both worlds. yeah ill have to take it a little easy if I want good MPG, but you would have to do that with a v8 as well. as far as it lasting? if you waiting to see how long it will last, they will have new motors out by then. anything mechanical will break eventually, especially if you use it for its intended purpose. yeah down the road I may have to replace a few things, but that's with any vehicle if you are trying to go the distance. now if I were replacing the same thing over and over and having a ton of major issues that would be a different story.

My next new vehicle purchase this summer (not a F150) will be ordered with a 2.7EB. The laser etched fractured bearing caps piqued my interest...the fact that the engine will run without the cap bolts installed sealed the deal (only half joking). Since I've surpassed 100K mileage on only one vehicle in my lifetime (a 110 mile-a-day commuter), I have faith that the 2.7 will surpass my needs without issue.

I think they are 275/70/18 but I would need to look to be positive. I have just over 1300 miles on mine so far and it's sitting at 18.1 lifetime MPG according to the truck computer. I have not done any hand calculating. My 2013 3.5 was sitting at 14.7 MPG when I sold it. The 2.7 is much better on gas than the 3.5. That's for certain. I was planning to buy a 5.0 and my local sales manager talked me into the 2.7. I had two 3.5 Ecoboost and while the engine is super powerful, the gas mileage is lacking. My brother got better with his 5.0 with same tire size and gear ratio than I did with my 3.5. So far I'm very satisfied with the 2.7.
Awesome news!

I realize it takes a long time to find out the truth about the longevity of an engine, but I believe fuel dilution from blow-by has occured on the 3.5 ecoboost at very low mileage on a lot of trucks. I don't believe there are a lot of 3.5 ecoboosts that have worn out yet, but there also aren't a lot with over 150,000 miles. With the fuel dilution of the oil I think there is just no way the 3.5 ecoboost is going to be a real long-lasting engine. I believe you can learn a lot about what to expect for longevity by doing oil analysis. If there aren't many reports of problems with the 2.7 in the next year and oil analysis looks relatively good from those that do it, I will probably take the chance and go with that engine. I'm also probably going to take a chance with the 10 speed when it arrives, but I think since it is a joint effort with GM it will be a lot less likely to have problems.

My fairly well optioned 2013 XLT 4x4 crewcab Ecoboost gets better mileage than my 2006 F-150 did, and it was a 2WD stripper with the short cab, rubber floor, crank windows, standard shift and a 4.2 V-6 putting out about 200HP.

Makes me wonder what the Hell some people expect of the behemoths we drive around in nowadays.

I have searched in vain for UOAs on the 2.7EB engine. Several have mentioned doing analyses but don't post any results...frustrating. I will soon be purchasing a 2.7EB in a Lincoln product without any apprehensions about longevity. With a combo of conservative driving (stay out of boost unless necessary), DIY OCIs (luv the up-front on-top oil filter location) of ~ 5K miles with a premium syn oil (e.g. Pennzoil Platinum), and looking forward to the new GF-6 spec oils proposed for fall of 2016, I have confidence that the new vehicle will outlast me.

The dealer gave me a 2.7L for the night to try out. So far I am liking the engine, my results for MPG over 80 miles of mixed driving in rush hour traffic, around town taking the wife for a drive and gassing it a bit was 19.3mpg. Its a SCREW Lariat 500a with 3.55 gears 4x4. I had a 5.0 over the weekend and with no rush hour traffic and mostly country roads I was getting 17, it was an xlt but otherwise same set up. The 5.0 had 6K miles on it the 2.7L had 160 miles on it. Im pretty sure after the 2.7 gets a couple miles on it, 20mpg will not be un heard of in mixed driving. I know my 2011 5.0 in traffic returned about 16 and that was with a 2" level and 34" tires on 20" rims. Not planning on going all out with the 2.7" just doing a 1.5" level and different tires but stock size on the 18"s. If I can run that setup and get 20mpg on my drive Ill be a happy man. (I drive about 17,000 miles a year, mainly commuting so yes MPG is important to me)

I've got a similar commute, so i'm interested in the 2.7 as well. If it can average 20 mpg on my commute, it may be the engine I want. I drive 75 in a 70 mph zone, so 20 avg. may be too much to ask. The 5.0 truck I used to have averaged 17, which isn't terrible. If the 2.7 averages 20 on the same drive, it's a winner. If it only averages 18.5 or less...I guess I'd probably choose one of the bigger engines.

I did a little highway at 70 (speed limit was 60) and with the 3.55 gears I was sitting around 1800 or so RPMs and used little to no boost to keep speed up. I reset the trip 2 for this little section and it was showing a little over 23 mpg, this was only for about 10 miles so in no way a stick to measure by. Im sure once you go over 2000 rpm, add in some elevation changes and a headwind itll drop. I know in my 2011 5.0 once I went over 2000 rpm (3.73 gears 70 mph was around 2-2.1K RPM) I averaged 16.5, dropped down to 65 was getting 17-18.

I think Im going to go with the 2.7, between the 2-3 mpg better and the start stop while waiting for lights I should see a decent savings in fuel. I computed the fuel against my econo car and at $2.50 a gallon the 2.7L will run me about $14 more a week, the V8 will run me $29, over a year that's pretty substantial. Add in the similarly speced V8 that adds another $50 a month to the payment and Im having a hard time justifying the V8 sound for the price difference. The 2.7L has all the power I need for commuting and weekend warrior work and I think itll perform very well as a road trip vehicle.

Truck Im waiting on comes in a week from today according to COTUS, going to sign the prelim purchase order on Saturday!

Tux black Lariat Sport SCREW 4x4 2.7L EB, 501a, Moonroof, Nav and 36 gallon tank.

Thank you to all of those that have posted their fuel economy so far. I was initially considering a Lariat w502a and 3.5 ecoboost but after reading this thread decided to go test drive the 2.7. I think it will be perfect for me, I couldn't believe how well it drove, felt like a rocket off the line(even without being in sport mode). Only thing that caught me off guard was the auto start stop. Fuel level was low and salesman let me take it out with 15 miles to empty...first stop light I felt the truck shudder a little and the tach dropped. Had a mini heart attack thinking it just ran out of fuel until I saw the green A on the dash.
